It's really something you have to measure. Each setup can be slightly different. You're trying to set up a 0.75" - 1.00" slide clearance, before the slide bottoms out on the output shaft. Every reputable driveshaft company will provide you with their instructions on how to measure. Check online.

I've set up three different driveshafts in my car over the years. I know my rear axle has been moved back at least 1/4" for 28" tire clearance. I can look and see if I still have the length of my Mark Williams 3" chrome moly DS that connected my TH400 to a Strange 12-bolt. Based on originally running my stock DS with both the stock 10-bolt and the Strange 12-bolt, that change does not affect length.

I removed the MW 3" DS and remeasured it so I could sell it. The guy that bought it figured it would work with his TH400 setup, and I guess it did, because he never came back to me. That DS was replaced when I added a Gear Vendors O/D to the TH400, requiring a shorter DS. I think I have a photo showing the length, and I know I put the length in an email, but that will be hard to find, since it was a couple years ago.
