I like the idea(original) depending on the use of the system.

On the other forums, I've read it can get pricey.

    What's the setup for?

If you can 24X it that would be my hands down recommendation. LS PCM is more than capable and has far more driveability tuning capability than most of the aftermarket computers. This is coming from a guy who had a FAST XFI 2.0 on a 76mm turbo LT1 setup.

What didn't you like about the fast xfi? I was looking at a BS3 as well as an upgrade. I want the car more drive able and consistent

Frankly, there weren't enough driveability tables. Not enough stuff in there for minor adjustment like cold start, idle tuning, start timing retard, etc. I was having FITS trying to get cold start tuning dialed in on my TA. FITS. The BS3 is in the same boat. Now granted, the aftermarkets give you the capability to do instant on the fly adjustments, and are far more capable in terms of sheer computing/processing power. They also for the most part have universal capability to run multiple stages of nitrous, command an electronic boost controller, etc. But using the factory LS PCM IMO gives you more power to fine tune everything moreso than the aftermarkets.

I know on the XFI the VE table was only a set number of cells in the grid, so you had to figure out where you want your set points for each hash in the grid. If you wanted a full 1000 to 7000 powerband then you had to go in 600 RPM increments for example. That left a LOT on the table for interpolation of the data between cells. You could expand the lower say 1000-4000 cells to take up more room for finer detail but then above 4000 to 7000 you're going to have LARGER cell splits causing MORE interpolation to be done. I know the LS PCM has a base VE table and an extended VE table that leaves FAR less to interpolate in the between cell areas. Just for example though.

Price comes into play too. You can cobble together a 24X setup for under $1500 and not have to worry about the opti anymore. $1500 might get you an XFI 2.0, Holley Dominator, or BS3, but then you need adapter harnesses, piggy back harnesses, etc, and you're still stuck with the opti unless you do a custom mounted crank trigger (or the 24x setup which was XFI compatible, but you lose your tach IIRC).

Just my $.02, but between the money and elimination of the opti, the 24X can't be beat.
