Is it because the 227s have 60/40 valve spacing?

You need pistons with 60/40 valve spacing to work properly. You can get away with regular pistons if you aren't running a big cam, but put a big cam over 250 degrees with a shallow lsa and the valves will hit because the reliefs in the piston tops aren't aligned.
