    Default Need paint help

My budget just ran thin thanks to spending $460 on new shocks. After I get the suspension put under the maro, I still have one last important thing to do, and that is to fix the black on my front bumper (around the headlights and grille). I want to fill the license plate bracket holes, and some holes from the previous ownder's headlight covers. What is the best material to do this with? Bondo? Some kind of epoxy? Then I need to re-paint the black. I'll be using dupli-color bomb-cans. What kind of prep will I have to do? I've done plenty of painting before, but I've never gotten a crisp tape line. How do I mask around the curves on the black (what kind of tape)? The reason I have so many questions is because this is my first time painting a urethane bumper, slightly confused.

For tape make sure you use 3M FineLine. It really does give you the best lines. Then just use regular masking tape on top of the fineline to hold the masking paper.

For paint I would not use Dupli-Color. I have not had good luck with it. It truely is crap IMO. I'm not just saying this because I work for NAPA but the absolute best spray can paint I have ever used is Martin Senour "TECnique". It is professional quality paint in a spray can. I'm not sure the "sheen" you want I assume close to stock so here are some part numbers if you want to take them into the store.

    Primer:
    7225 - Flexible Parts Primer

    Black options:
    7240 - Bumper Black
    7244 - Trim Black

You can also get a Flex Bumper Repair Kit while you are there. To fill the holes you need a backing material otherwise the bondo could just fall out. The repair kit number is 765-1540. 3M also has some specific repair kits. I'm sure the store can point you in the right direction.

Prep is key to a lasting, good looking repair. Take your time, and make sure everything is flat and smooth.

    Hope this helps.

About how much gloss do those paints have? I'm looking for a little more gloss than stock, not much of course since it's spray paint.

There are actually more options for the black than what I listed. I'm sure you will be surprised when you use them that it actually does not look like spray bomb paint. I used the gloss black on some underhood stuff and I was shocked at the gloss.

You will just have to go to the store and actually compare the caps and decide what sheen you want. I'm guessing you will end up with trim black, but it's just a guess.
