They don't dissipate heat as quickly as aluminum and are more prone to causing detonation.

nah, they are very thin like a Vortec head.
Aluminum LT1 haeds would be the way to go instead of the cast iron LT1 heads.
If worried about strength aftermarket alu Trick Flow heads would be the best choice.
If aluminum gets wounded some way, it is repairable and can be as good as new.
If cast iron heads are wounded they are junk.
