Default Starter grinding after T56 swap

I haven't gotten a chance to crawl under the car to mess with it, but my starter grinds a little bit now. It catches fine at first, turns the engine over normally, then as the engine fires it grinds a little bit. Is there any kind of adjustment that can be made, or is it because it's a really old starter on a new flywheel? I'm fairly certain it's the original starter. It's also had lots of oil on and in it from all the massive leaks this car has had.

Maybe the bendix isn't drawing back quickly enough and its catching? You figure if it wasnt shimmed correctly now, it would grind even trying to engage the flywheel to begin with. My bet is on a bad starter.

Most starters have a small hole in bottom side of the starter nose so you can use a small screwdriver to pop the starter drive out into the flywheel. The drive should release freely. If it doesn't release freely then a shim is required. Usually if it makes a noise after you let go of the key and running that's a good sign of needing shimmed. Clearance is too tight in the gears causing it to bind and hang up after the engine is running. Could also be defective starter where something is sticking or binding internally.

The noise it makes is kinda odd, it only makes the noise right as the engine starts to fire. When I initially hit the key, it sounds normal, and it doesn't continue after I let go of the key, just the last 1/4 to 1/2 second of me starting it.
