Did you happen to check the plungers on the lifters while in there?

I think I mentioned it earlier in the thread. If you push on the rocker, the plungers should not depress if pumped up. (Engine warm)

You also mentioned at one point about some pushrods squirting more or less oil than others. If for some reason you've got restricted flow going to a lifter it won't allow it to pump up properly and take up the slack between the preload and bottom of the lifter plunger bore. Any slack in the valve train is going to cause some noise

I'm just spit balling here to try to give you some ideas or directions of things to look at. I've seen for myself weak lifters ( not collapsed, but just bled off too quickly to keep the push rods from going slack ) that made a lot of noise.

I have thought about that. Just odd that the sound didn't change from old to new ls7 lifters. @firebird_1995

The higher oiling was more due to maladjusted rockers I believe. I no longer see inconsistent oiling

So the latest update is... I got 2 new rockers to switch around....sound is unchanged...

car is together and continues to drive without issues despite sound. currently car remains daily driver, so she will continue to be driven to work.

looking to pick up 3rd car for wife; until then will continue as time allows to look for signs of problems. Currently burnt out on searching. After third car is purchased may look further into wrist pins or lower end and a rebuild... wasnt planning to do one so soon, but not sure what else to do. Open to advice on sound and rebuild as I will be continuing to research both as time allows.
