Not necessarily right behind, but anywhere in the intake manifold where the reference line or sensor will see vacuum and boost.
The pressure sensor needs to see vacuum as soon as the TB blades close to shut it off immediately.
If you get the boost reference signal from the charge pipe or compressor housing, there might still be some pressure there even after the TB blades close. That would keep the water/meth on for a second after the blades close and can cause sputtering. It was a problem on my car at first and a friends turbo Mustang. Connecting the reference line to the manifold fixed the problem.1989 Mazda RX7 Turbo II, 357ci LT1, AI TFS CNC heads, Garrett GTX4708R, Ford 8.8" SAS, TH400. (Current project)

I Tee'd into the brake booster vacuum hose for the map reference on my alkycontrol kit. If you haven't purchased yet don't rule out alkycontrol, I've installed them on f-bodies, c5's and even a fox body. Nice kits!

i havnt bought anything yet. just trying to understand some things befor i get into them lol i have a few vacuum ports on the side of the intake that aren't used and had em capped. im guessing i could use one of those right? also do these kits regulate how much meth to spray based on boost? like... the more boost the more it sprays? or is it a constant amount no matter what the boost is.. sorry if that was a dumb question lol still learning here

Most of the simple kits vary amount of meth sprayed by size of nozzle, so pick how much you want and "jet" accordingly. Once the pump is kicked on, its spraying that much etc, some kits can ramp up pressure for a not so abrupt initial hit but again, fancy.
Correlation does not imply causation.

Yea you can use one of those ports. It is a fully adjustable progressive kit with controls for activation point, how quickly it increases volume, and total volume sprayed. It's best to let an experienced tuner set it for you on the dyno.
