    Essentially what's going on is that your system wasn't holding pressure. The stock cap is set for I believe 18lbs of pressure. Pressurized systems have a higher boiling point which is why you DON'T get this issue with a good radiator cap. Bad radiator cap (or leak causing loss of pressure) and your boiling point comes way down, coolant expands, pushes out overflow tank, locomotive impression.
