what drives the optispark?
I'm trying to find out what the part is inside the timing cover that drives the optispark. Its the small splined hole that the opti shaft goes into. Is this the camshaft timing gear itself or some other part? I need to buy a new replacement as the old splines are too worn down to index the opti correctly. I called a few chevrolet dealerships and they have no idea what im talking about ( figures ) thanks all!

1993(for sure) up to mid 95(I think) opti ran off the cam gear. There is a splined hole in the gear. Napa,AZ, etc.. has timing gear sets with chain. I would replace it all since you need to remove the timing cover anyway.

so its the actual camshaft gear itself not another part? the car is a 94 z28 by the way. the only reason i wanna replace it is because it seems as if some previous owner forced an opti on there are wore down the splines

Yep, is the gear. It is possible to jam the splined shaft in there wrong, so it could be screwed up.
