I was in a simular situation not too long ago and i contacted Lloyd Elliott about springs. I wanted just to freshen the motor and put 1.6s on top of my stock cam, but leave room for growth later. this was his response:

If keeping the stock cam a set of Bullet VS 574 springs will work fine. They will even work with a Hot cama nd 1.6 rockers if you wanted. At the 1.780 installed ht of a factory LT1, you would have 115 lbs of seat pressure and 340 lbs open. these are $70 shipped thru Bullet Racing Cams (662-893-8022).
The Bullet VS 2700 is a REAL nice single spring and has 140 lbs @ 1.780 and 360 lbs open pressure. These will work with antghing from a Hot Cam up to the 226/230 .565/.565 111 LSa cam mentioned on my site. These are $130 shipped from Bullet.
Both of these will work with stock retainers, locks, loctors, etc. Just slap em on and go. They also work with Self Aligning rockers.

There is also the option of patiot spring kit, a very nice setup but they are bigger than stock LT1 springs and require macine work on the heads. https://www.patriot-performance.com/...&cat=52&page=2 its a great deal for great springs with titanium retainers, but mine was a DD and i didn't want to deal with the machine work. I went with the 2700 and they are working great, i like the idea that i have most of the change done i case i decide to get a bigger cam in the future. Im just going to do things the right way and upgrade everything. Im planning on changing the cam anyway no sense in doing it twice. One other question, i know ls1 lifters work in lt1s but are the ones in the ls1 any better then our stock ones?

I wouldn't. What's a set of LT4 valve springs cost? $40? If you plan on putting a cam bigger than the hotcam in and the future, I'd go with a better set of springs than the LT4's.

I have ls7 lifters so im gonna use those and im not going to use lt4 springs cuz they're really no better then stock

I have to agree, what one COULD do and what he SHOULD do are different things. Irrespective of those who have not had a failure, should a failure occur, the damage can be extensive, up into the thousands of dollars to complete repairs.
Some choose to chance it, others follow the safe recommendations. One thing I've found stated over and over is not to cut corners in choosing valve train parts.
Of course, as with most things, it's a personal call.
As far as lifters, from all I've recently read, GM now only offers one HR lifter for our engines - L98/LT1. It's reported to be a direct replacement. But knowing how guys are, some are using Cadillac lifters, LS7 lifters and maybe some others.
Are they better??? Jury's out because, even though the Cadillac lifters are supposed to be good to 7k, some guys are reporting failures.
Lately I've been getting several PMs about lifters and their preload settings. So I started looking into them in more detail. What I've found is there ARE differences, like the pushrod cup sitting higher, lifters calling for more preload, oil hole placement, etc.
So I've concluded it's no longer a one-size-fits-all situation and that each lifter has to be chosen and setup based on THAT lifter. As an example, one site I found stated that after extensive testing, it was found that the LS7 lifter likes and works best with .070"/.090" of preload. This is substantially different from the .030"/.040" we'd seen so often recommended in the past.
But even that recommendation has come under attack. For YEARS guys have been debating over preload and it's covered the whole spectrum, from as little as one-flat turn of preload all the way to TWO FULL turns. Man, it's CRAZY!!!
Bottom line: It's HOMEWORK time.

I believe ls7 lifters the cup is either lower or higher than the ltx lifters. I may be wrong on that though.
