Default How to install new crank timing gear at home?

I bought a rebuilt shortblock, and there is no crank timing gear installed. I have a new Cloyes 3039 timing set and need to install the crank gear at home.
Whats the best way to go about doing this?
Do I install the gear over the key, or install the gear and tap in the key?

Install the key, then slide the gear over the key.
