I wanted to respond to this without reading anyone elses responses, so sorry for the delay. And if this stuff it redundant...please understand, that I wont read their responses till I give you my opinion.
FIRST, are you full time with benefits? The reason I ask (and Im speaking from CURRENT experience) if you hurt your back while working...ITS WORKMAN's COMP (in fact I think that counts even if your not full time)... go have it addressed. If they want to take advantage of you and you are willing to do it.. FINE, but when you get hurt...now its your turn to fully utilize the things that are made available to you.
As for the empty promises from your manager friend, you can pull him aside and address him, but I gotta say.. My biggest concern is if your hurt... HANDLE that. At 45 years old, you sure as FK are not getting any younger, and its only gonna kick your ass more though out your life.
