My Pros and Cons in a small town PD.

Well, on 01/26/11 into 01/27/11 we here in SE PA had a decent snow storm......

A quick hitting 12" of snow and people who didnt heed the warnings of the weather forcasters, put me to work that midnight shift.

I worked the 7pm-7am shift from the 26th into the 27th. After my first several disabled vehicles, and realizing that tow companies had a 2-4 hours ETA, I would need to arm myself with a shovel...

I had my shovel riding shotgun with me for the remainder of the shift and we shoveled out and pushed alot of vehicles out of sticky predicimants that would have later been disasters as other vehicles would have crashed into the disabled vehicles.... well anyways... long story short....

After shoveling, and pushing over 20 cars out of prediciments that could have been avoided by staying the F home, I got out of my SUV for one more, when I did the good old slip a jerk and I felt a pop from my back.....being the troope (no pun intended) that I am, I kept on keeping on till 7am....

Went home, went to bed woke up stiff as a board, but.... being the guy who does not want to dick other people over at work, I didnt call off, I went in and did another 12 hour shift of pure misery.......

Since I did send the Chief emails documenting what was going on, I got sent to the W/C doctor and I am now out of work for a while. Start PT tomorrow, and got lots of drugs....

So, expect more posting from me....

I guess the whole thing behind this story is me pleading with you , to stay home if you can when the weather is shitty, because you may not realize that someone is going to get really hurt even if you make it home in one piece without any crashes....

At least you're getting it taken care of. I hurt my back at work a year and a half ago and reinjure it doing the dumbest things. I just hurt it again last weekend and still recovering. When it snows around here I don't even go into work. Although, I can work remotely :)

Take care of it and enjoy the drugs!

Of course man.... I dont take any offense. Honestly I do the same. I hate being off work, I hate knowing others have to pick up my slack. Im the guy that picks up others slack, not this way.

I will, thank you. Ive hurt all kinds of body parts, but the back by far is the most crippling!

Thank You man, I appreciate the well wishes, and you are correct, 260 is prob part of why it hurt me so quickly... however without that 260, I prob would not have been able to assist all of those people that got themselves stuck.....

dont get me wrong i didnt mean you got hurt because of your size but now that you are hurt being a bigger dude makes it rough with a hurt back,,did me anyway and then i was prob 220,,now im 245 and i feel it some mornings just trying to roll out of bed,,at least i broke it when i was young i guess

I knew what you meant, but I also believe that being heavier, made that slip and jerk more damaging....

i had endoscopic discectomy on l4/5 l5/s1 back in 05. they wanted to fuse my spine but my wife work in w/c so she found me a specialist. best thing i ever done, i could touch my toes a week after surgery. never have had a problem since

Hope you get better soon. I hurt my shoulder some how and with no ins. and being self employed, I just grin and bare it.

Well, surgery has not even been discussed yet because WC protocol is to begin treatment with meds and PT... and return every few days.... so with PT 2moro, we will see....

Hopefully its something that you just strained, and just some R&R will heal it back to normal. I have often been in similar situations where I didn't want to pull the woose card so I just toughed it out, and paid the price for it later. The older I get, the more I realize I should just say "no" more often.

I am definatly enjoying some time off from work right now (due to the snow). I love my job, but I still appreciate the time off.

Not to scew the thread too much, but does anyone know how much more the midwest is supposed to get? And when it will stop?

here in chandler ok its sunny with 25 mph winds. been out shoveling for 20 min at a time. we got 16 inches of that white crap and drifts 6 -11 ft its all done here wind chill has it a -11

Thank You man... did my first day of PT. Felt like hard work, with the pain tho (I know Im a bitch...). Felt ok after I left, but as I sat for a while I stiffened right back up, and the pain was just as bad as when I got there....

Man that sucks. Did you get x-rays?

Not yet , unfortunatley WC protocol for back injury is P.T. plus medication..... then P.T. plus more medication..... then X-rays........

This friday is my next apt with the WC Doctor...... So if not better by then, Im guessing that wll be the orders for X-rays....

Hope you feel better man. I've been off work for weeks now due to weather and I'm starting to get depressed lol... staying up late, waking up late, slacking on my diet. I just now started forcing myself back into my "normal" routine minus actually working. Just trying to do things around the house. I know your injured but IMO at least try to keep a little busy cuz if your anything like me it's easy to fall into a small depression lol

Thanks man... my dilema is I used to keep busy with work, the gym and working on cars at the garage. Well, Im outta work, I am not allowed to lift, and I can go hang at the garage, however, I cant really do anything, and with the pain shooting from my lower back to my knee to my ankle, as if someone was constantly electrocuting me, Im freakin misreable.

I take pain meds and then Im just lethargic and in pain..... and all i wanna do is sleep. blah.

Hope ya feel better Popo, back injuries are the worst.... They always seem to come back.

That and, at least now I dont feel like the only person who wants people to stay the F home when it snows. People in MA just dont understand how to drive, let alone in blizzard wind/snow. Somehow everytime Im out all night plowing, theres always some dumbass stuck somewhere in the way at 3-4am.

Its even worse because back in 2004ish I was involved in an accident where a 79 year old man failed to see me directing traffic, and barreled by the traffic I was detouring and nearly crushed me in between the front of his minivan and the entire driver side of my crown vic. I had seen him comming and did my best to clear my car (actually jumped on and almost over the trunk) however when he hit my car he ended up launching me through the air. My impact with the ground was feet first before falling and hitting the ground. I was full of piss and vinigar back then and I brushed it off and finished my shift in another car... however a few days later I was nearly paralyzed with pain in bed, and taken to the hospital, where injury to my spine was discovered..... Being the dumb ass tough guy I was, I brushed it off and never took off from work.... years later, it took a snow storm to bring that pain crashing back down on me.....:puke:

Thank You, feeling a lil better, but it changes day to day...... PT was good today, and I visit with the WC doc again tomorrow.

Well recently, I have become the newest secretary at the PD, Apparently the Chief has soooo much stuff that needs to get done, that he called me in for light duty, so I have been at the PD (8 hours a day filing and shredding). Im not complaining, its keeping me busy.

What bothers me is that, I have a partner that tore his shoulder 2 years ago, and while out for 6 months, he was never called in for light duty.... I had two other partners who were injured off duty, who were struggling for money and requesting some light duty work, and there was nothing for them either. Me.... who gets hurt on duty, and because it was on duty I remain getting 100% of my pay (in fact more because it is not taxable) has to return to work.

Either way Im still not complaining, just updating.... I know that not everyone is treated equally, its the way the world turns...



Weds I went to the workmans comp doctor, and when asked what my pain level was on a 10 scale, i advised it was a 7-8...... ( I believe sitting on my arse all day at the office is aggrivating my injury)... he replied to me, that the MRI reports state that I was "structurally sound" and that people do not have more than 6 weeks of pain from a back injury unless there is structural damage.... I informed him that is great news, but unfortunatly I must be Atypical...... Either way, after all but being called a liar by this asshole, he gave me another script for pain meds (which just stacks up in my cabinet because I dont like taking them) and ordered me another 4 weeks of "light duty." Im confused.... is the idea to fukn bandaid me, or make me better.... pain meds and more time of sitting on my ass.....? really. After nearly strangling the doctor that all but called me a liar, I left and went back to work.... shred....file....shred....file... OH YEAH, the doctor also said, " you need to go to your family doctor and tell him it is his responsibility to figure out whats wrong with you, because its probably not work related." I SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING ALREADY....... (GLOVES.....ON!)


Thurs, I went to my scheduled PAIN MANAGMENT appointment for cortisone injections. I was prescribed 3 valiums to take prior to relax my muscles and then MULTIPLE "locals" prior to and during the injection. Unlike most cortisone injections, mine were not EPIDURALs (meaning injected into the spine) mine were injections into a joint called the "SI" or sacroliac join.... MOST PAINFUL PROCEEDURE EVER.... The doc begins by threading the needle in, then using an x-ray machine, he moves the machine, and changes angles of the needle, pushes further, then moves the xray machine again , and one more time changes the angle of the needle again.... all while tearing tissue on the way in........ HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!

While being injected I spoke with that doctor and I advised him what the other doctor had said. He confirmed that my feeling of being offended and angry was supported and advised that the doctor was ignorant. So now this doctor will be my second opinion doctor..... Finally, I called my family doctor, explained the situation, and he told me to set up an appointment to come in and get checked out with him.... he explained to me that unfortunatley, a LARGE percent of people on W/C fake for time off, disability or even just the meds, and unfortunatley I was being treated the same way because of the majority.......

HE KNOWS, I KNOW, I think MOST OF YOU ON HERE THAT KNOW ME KNOW, I am a proud Officer, and I love my job..... I want to be fixed so I can do my JOB.... the job I love, and have wanted to do since I was a kid and the first time I saw CHiPs (if your not to young to know what that is)......... It kills me to think Im being accused of BS and nearly ignored, as I suffer from this BS......


ANYWAYS, I just needed to vent, in fact I dont think I got everything out that was racing through my mind, but I do feel better.... Thanks for looking....

man that sucks, you're a good guy, and from what I read you're one of the good officers but get treated like this. I'm sorry for what you're going through man, and I hope everything gets resolved.

That's the problem. That and our transportation system can't handle the traffic in the snow since you need extra space in front of you and to slow down. People don't pay attention and aren't patient enough. Then there's idiots that try to make the commute in cars that aren't equipped for it, and put others at risk.

UPDATE: had two cortisone shots into the SI joints a few weeks ago, and it was the most painful experience Ive ever dealt with in the hospital... Anyways. The original origin of pain still exists, however the "mind of its own" way of giving me pain that switched from leg to leg has stopped. I believe those shots worked on my right side... so now I can focus on the side that originally was injured...


Just had 4 injections into the right side, in an attempt to block the nerve receptors... its a trial and error thing, since he cant block all the nerves at once.... One thing I can tell you.... the first four were not in the right spot.... PAIN still exists, now even worse from the pain from the four injections sites....

So for now, Im still the PD glorified secretary... but... I look incredible in a dress....:cry:
