A local kid just swapped in a tbi to his 85 TA and gave me this 305 and an edlbrock performer manifold. His dad said it made a little noise. Not sure what to do with it but I think I might make a gbody 442 clone after the Buick is done and for ease of getting it running just using this carb 305. I know of a super clean, low mile 80s cutlass with a 350 diesel that doesn't hold oil pressure that I can get for cheap.
Plus it would be fun to teach my fiancé how to build a sbc.
Thats cool. Its not gonna be any kind of "power" maker but it will get the job done in a cruiser. But are u gonna look to see what the noise was before u drop it in a new project?
Yeah I was doing some reading on them. If you sift through the "scrap it and get a 350" talk, quite a bit of people regularly 250hp out of them. I'll go through it and try some home porting on the heads and see what happens.
Toss a t5 or 4l60 behind it and 3.73s and it should cruise nicely.
Nothing wrong with them as long as you put yourself on a strict budget. Where you hear a lot of talk about scrapping them is from people that have put some money into them, trying to get some power out of it. It will rack up fast so set a limit ahead of time.
You'll most likely find it wiped a lobe off the cam.
