Anyone run the stock 6 speed for weekend drag racing?

I would really like to keep my car fun to drive as long as I keep it a street car, I hate automatics on the street and I cant afford a built 4l60e so if I swap to an auto it will probly be a TH350.

I plan to "freshin" up the bottom end and go with ported heads and a decent cam, maybe 400rwhp for now. But I would really like to be consistant and actually have a chance at winning witch is the only reson im considering a auto swap. I will just be running 1/8th mile so I will more than likely run the deepest rear gear I possibly can. Im thinking 4.88 or so

If anyone has any input or experience on this let me know.

There are certain things you can do to a t56 to make it more reliable. Brass fork pads, billet syncro keys, fresh syncros.

I have a 350th swap I'm debating on using. Havnt decided just yet.

I converted to a six speed for a very short time. Racing it was very inconsistant too. I prefer a high stalled auto to the six speed.

how was it on the street?ive never owned an automatic but have driven one with a really loose converter and it was horrible untill you really got rolling, it seemed like it took 1/4 throttle to get the car up and moving. I like to sling the rear around corners and dont see that happening with a stalled auto much. But thats why im asking, maybe the lower 1st gear in the 4l60e would make it not stall so bad from a stop?
Maybe I should just swap the 6 speed in a truck with a low gear for my street toy and make the formula a trailer queen lol

Edit: mysterybird I also see you say "slipping 4l60e" in your sig.... How many transmissions have you went through with your setup and what are you 60 ft times?

My black 93 was bone stock driveline, and granted it was bolt on only but I used to hammer the shit out of that thing and it gave me no grief. A relatively stock rebuild from D&D is in the purple car and it's hasn't been fussing either trying to harness 800-900 crank HP.

A good quality tight converter can feel like stock under most conditions and when locked up it's the same as stock, but when you hammer it it brings the RPM's up to get you in the power band quicker. I have tried the 4l60e, the t56, and this year moving on to the 4l80e. My signature says slipping because last year at the track I was testing and tuning the trans was slipping real bad between 2-3 shift at WOT.

so I take it noone with a t56 cosistanly races on the weekends?

I ran mine stock for several seasons. When I broke the 10 bolt and went to a 9" I decided it was time to upgrade the trans as well. Steel 3-4 fork, billet keys, carbon blocker rings, brass fork pads, a good shifter and replaced any worn bearings. You can get all the parts form D&D for a reasonable price. Even in stock form the T56 is a pretty tough trans, when you upgrade the parts I mentioned it can handle quite a bit of power. Consistency is dependand on how much you drive it, there's nothing more improtant than seat time. 2 step and shift light will help a ton. I can run mine within less than 1/10th everytime.
