For everyone that is thinking about building a motor, then going forced inducted, Really lay it out and check out the TOTAL cost. I was supercharged now going turbo, Just from switching out I am in for over 10 Grand so far, My point is and I know this is for LT's but I could of bought a new 427 LS motor, put heads and cam and make close to 600 rwhp. My first build (Supercharged) ended up at over 30 grand, Blowing up superchargers, Trannies, clutches ect. so think it out, It might surprise you at what you will end up cost wise...

Thats why I decided I should build a mild Nitrous motor and build the rest of the car untill I could afford a real crazy engine combo.

It gets expensive, for the money I have in my Trans Am I'm not that far off from a used C5 Z06.

exactly why I am only interested in N/A builds at this stage of my life. I'll considering nitrous when i have a forged bottom. But im also interested in taking corners so turbo lag aint my thing.

Yup, If I include the cost of the car when I bought it new up to now, I could of bought a NEW C6!!!!

This is one of the many reasons that I sold my T/a and got something that already had boost...

Its still cooler to do it in a LT1. I love being the underdog. Besides the good ole LT can hold its own against almost anything.

except I would have had to put well over what I paid for my termi to get what I wanted.

may sound stupid, and a waste of money. Id rather build an underdog. and then later on build something easier.

I'm glad I am doing it on the cheap anymore, my rx7 is a junkyard motor with a turbo, and the firebird I parted out the $$$ items and ended up with the rest of the car super cheap. Hopefully by the time I hit the $10,000 mark total for both cars the rx7 will be low 9's and the formula mid 11's. :)

Your TERMI was 18g if I remember.... with finance charges aft a 4 or 5 year loan... you will be over 20g....

Your 20 , so you could not have had your car more than 4 years... in 2009 your 96 TA prob cost you no more than 8g.... am I right so far....?

If I am (and I guessed on the high side because it was freakin NICE!!!, that left you 12g.... your telling me you couldnt have done your motor for 12 g.....?

Termi was 19k, got the loan for 3 years at 4.75% interest.

I only paid 4k for my 96 T/a last Dec. (didnt look anything like it does now) and then put about 3-4k into it with all the bolt ons and appearance stuff.

I wanted to do my motor right, top notch stuff and a blower, plus all the suspension stuff, 9", 6spd swap. It would have been a good chunk of change.

If I had to do it all over I would have kept my 95 (my first car) and the no payments and built that one. because that would have been a good project car and would have been awesome in no time without the payments. But oh well, the past is the past, can't turn it back now.

Yea when I build my turbo setup I was doing a budget build.

Luckily I already had a stout forged 4 bolt splayed main 383.

First I spent about $2000 in the fuel and turbo setup (DYI build)
Then the rad went, and fans werent enought ($500)
Then the trans went on the first ever 1-2 shift ($1500) (went th400 with a 3600 stall)
The I changed the Rear bc it was on borrowed time ($2000) (moser 9inch spool)
Then needed better rims and tires to hook ($1300)
Then I needed a cage for the track ($300) (not installed yet)
Seatbelts and safty gear for the track ($400)

Then the passenger side LE2 head cracked ($1300 for ported AFRs)

Now im redoing the entire setup with a single plane, sbc dizzy, 4150 FAST TB, megasquirt

So in the end my turbo build exceeds 10,000 EASY

And I still have a car that needs a paint job lol

Would I do it different....yes I would take my time, I coulda went LSX like every one of my buddies but I would rather build a SBC or LT1 just bc EVERYONE HAS LSx motors! There like mustangs!

I know I figure to spend about 1500-2k on mine. But I got my short block for 700 never fired. :)! With the kit Im sure I can get the car into the low 10s.

but still with your 19g Termi.... you want to add a KENNY BELL etc etc etc... (just read it in another thread...) so that 19g with finance is lil over 21,000.... pluss the KENNY BELL that you want to replace whats on there......... we are at an easy 24,000 total, EASY...

Now you tell me your TA was 4g..... .

Are you telling me... you could not have made the TA a TERMI DESTROYER for 16,ooo dollars????

I also like being the underdog, The LT's are coming back with a roar, It makes it all worth it when my little ole outdated LT1 Blows the doors off of a Modded Lingenfelter C6, ZO6 and a Hennesey Viper,,and I have :D. I took my car to a Dodge dealership in Austin, they were having Dyno day on Hemi's, Vipers. It was great when the people saw the numbers that my car put down, 648 RWHP/612 TQ. They freaked, Oh and there was a dude with a Viper that put down 535 RWHP and people were all aound his car and he was eating it up. But when I put my car on the rollers, everyone (But Him) came over to see, Heck they even helped me load my car back onto the trailer,,Needles to say, the Viper guy was pissed, Now that was priceless

I agree with pretty much everything here. I'm nearly $20K into my turbo build on the T/A and still have a couple more grand to go. Take your estimates, double them, then add some more.

$20K + not including the car itself and still haven't got mine running right. Letting stupid people wrench on my car has been the biggest problem.....:shame:

I have around 15k into my car and to get it to where i want it i'm looking at easily 10-15 more. Its pretty easy to say that you can build a turbo motor for 10k but when it comes down to doing it its a bit tougher hah. So i understand where huff is coming from on the buying a new car deal. However i'd rather just build my car and keep it and buy another vehicle to fill another niche. No reason to waste money on interest payments swapping around through different fast cars. Build one, build it right and keep it in good shape.
