Anyone almost buy another car before they bought theirs?

When I had my '94 Z28 and was looking for a manual I was in negotiations with a friend from Oklahoma to buy his Black 1995 Trans Am M6. It had a magnaflow catback, pcmforless tune, 3.73s, and 17x9.5 LG wheels.
My plans for it were a drop, TTII's and WS6 hood.

I also saw a nice Arctic White 1997 Trans Am WS6 M6 for sale right before my SS went up for sale. 99k miles, charcoal leather, mild alpine system. I drove down to look at it, and it was raining cats and dogs so I turned down the test drive (It was too clean to drive in the rain and it was pouring pretty good... I hydroplaned my '97 Z28 a little going down there and I didn't want to wreck a car that wasn't mine) I called him maybe 3 days later to come back down and test drive it and he had a deposit on it.

I was looking at a 98 SS. Auto, factory down to the air box, 30k miles. I didn't buy it because it was A) auto B) insurance and C) I thought I'd kill myself driving it.

I don't have a story like that with my current LT1 cars but I do have a great "one that got away story"

I graduated from high school back in '90. So I was 17-20 in the real early 90's. Back then, lol, it was not uncommon to see '69 Camaro's, Chevelle's, GTO's etc...all over the place cruising and for sale. I had my 1980 Z28 and the very first day of snowfall (yes it was my DD) it got rear-ended HARD. It didn't total out, but I got a check from the dudes insurance for $1900 (book value was like $2600 iirc) and got to keep the car (it was driveable). Now keep in mind this....for $3000 or so back in '91 or '92, you could literally own ANY musclecar you wanted if you looked hard enough. You couldn't buy anything elite or anything, but you could get a solid car for that kind of money all day long. A few weeks later a friend of mine was selling a CHERRY '67 SS396 Camaro. It didn't have the original motor, but it did have a 396. It was very clean and it was white with a red interior. He wanted 3 grand for it. All I had was $2400 at the time. I asked my dad to borrow the money and he said he would, but then dummy me, decided against it because I really liked te body style of the 2nd gens more, lol. So I waited and bought a '79 instead, lol.

Oops.

I don't like your analogy, lol.

I could have had a '69 SuperBee with a 440 4-bbl (it was originally a 6-pack car) too, but it was in primer and had a green interior, and I couldn't justify dropping $800 on it, lol.

another Oops.

My friends dad had a buddy who owned him some cash in the late 80s, so his friend gave him a 69 Camaro to even the debt. He gets the title but never picks the car up, when his friend asked what he wanted to do with it, he told him to scrap it. He still has the title to that car to this day, they have two 69 Camaros now, but still. Dont feel bad though, I like the late 70s Z28s, to me their so bad looking their cool.

I didn't actually read the question before posting. Disregard this post.

I actually was not in the market for a car, but when I saw mine for sale I had to buy it.

Shortly before purchasing our Purple Pearl 93, I was deployed and just browsing Auto Trader (this is in early 2003 mind you) and happened across a 1 of 12 98 Bright Purple Metallic WS6, six speed. For those that don't know me, purple is one of my favorite colors on a car, if not my absolute favorite, and those 98's just SCREAM to me. It had 48K miles, guy was asking $15.9K. I couldn't close the deal because I was still deployed. That hurts to this day.

The other one, wasn't a purchase thing. In 98, I held the winning McDonalds Monopoly game piece for a brand new Vette in my hands. It was Ventnor Avenue, the yellow row, and I thought to myself "nope, no way I"ll get Atlantic and Marvin Gardens." So I pitched it. Two days later had both the other ones. To this day I still have a VERY hard time dealing with that one.

The one that got away...

I was looking at fbodys cause everyone i knew had a mustang and i wanted to be different and faster. This guy came to my house and repaired our washing machine and had a v6 camaro, nice car and was respectably fast, and told us he knew where a 94 formula was for sale.

so he told us where it was and all the history of the car.
- it was totalled twice
- wires were burned under the hood from a fire
- the alternator wasnt charging.

He had bought the car a couple weeks before and brought it back upon discovering all this.

Well we went to look at teh car just for the hell of it. The salesman at the little backwoods car lot told me and my mom they would take 7000 for it and it "sounded like thunder and ran like hell".

The next day i went with my dad to test drive it mainly b/c i had never road in a fbody and it was hilarious. My dad pointed out everything wrong with the car and had the guy talked down to 2500 dollars from 7000. Then he told him we were not interested and we left.

Now the car, even though it was a piece of shit, made me fall in love with fbods. I had never been in something so fast and badass. It may have not been the one "that got away" but it did make me get into this hobby.

THE END.

Instead of doing the LT1 swap in my truck, I was debating on whether or not to just sell it and get an F-body. I went and test drove a black 1998 Z28 M6 that was an SS clone. I fell in love with that car, but I just couldn't justify the extra insurance and a car payment still being in high school and not working during baseball season. I'll still remember test driving it with my dad forever, even though I didn't get the car. That car is what made me fall in love with F-bodies. I bought my car 2 years later.

After high school, I went to work for that dealership that had the 98. The guy that bought it brought it in to get a clutch and the 10 bolt was toast. The car has been abused and isn't near the car its was just 4 years before. Rips in the leather, dirty, and just plain poor maintenance. Really disappoints me knowing how nice that car was when it had 40,000 miles on it. I think its up to 110K or somewhere around there when it came in. Not much over 100K

I actually was not in the market for a car, but when I saw mine for sale I had to buy it.

Same with me. I had a 1989 Formula 350 with a mild engine and a 6-speed swap. My Z showed up on a local lot and I stopped to look at it. I ended up buying and sold the Formula within a day.

Then a week later I had a small issue with the Z and I wanted to get rid of it. Came across a Dark Green Metallic 97 WS6. To this day I wish I would have gotten it, since I love the LT1 WS6's, and my favorite color is definitely NOT red.

i didn't really almost buy another one, but i did test drive one first..

a silver 95 T/A, t-tops and leather (i think the lighter leather than my graphite) at a dealer. it had 105k (20k more than mine had when i got it) similar options (A4, t-tops, etc) and i could tell it had been run hard (the fact i found steel braided hoses in the trunk leads me to believe someone was running N20) the dealer said they thought the car had gone to auction, but i had seen it on the back lot as i drove in. i test drove it, they wanted $5500 and wouldnt budge.. i ended up getting mine from a private seller for $6k and it was a much nicer car, and was in the color i really wanted (silver was nice, but i grew up on knight rider and smokey & the bandit and wanted black)

i really wanted an LT1 WS6 T/A but the ones i was finding were $10k+ and had the same or more miles than my 95 for $6k. they were asking $6800, but i talked them down to $6k because of an antenna not working, the headlight motor was grinding and a few small dings in the right rear 1/4, after i got the car, i ordered a new antenna mast from GMPD for $30, a headlight motor gear for $50, and got one of those dent wizards to remove the 3 dings for $45. I really thought they were going to counter offer me to $6500 or something, but they were moving back to NC within a month or so and the T/A was their 3rd car. FWIW i'm 99% sure it was only on autotrader for 4-5 days tops because i remember finding the silver one and test driving it the week before and mine was not on there and then the next week, on a tuesday, someone messaged me asking me if i was still looking for a black T/A because they found mine on there.

i hada 88 iroc, and when my friend gave me a ride in his 93 trans am i fell in love with the power. so i went shopping, there was a 98 z28 black, a4, 8900. bone stock. i was gunna buy it and then i found mine, 94 m6 41k on it. 7900. he threw in the subframes in the trunk, and a new powersteering pump. to this day i wonder if i would have been happier with the auto ls1.

I'm fairly sure im going to win this thread. I was a signature away from buying a VW VR6 GTI when i decided to finish up later on in the week. I was just randomly looking through the paper and seen my current ride 97' lt1 M6 Anniversary edition for sale with 52k on her.

I actually intended to go down to just test drive the car just to see what it was like, sort of a tire kicker if you will.

Needless to say after the test drive, i handed him a check and picked up the car the next day haha :D

EDIT: Not really a "the one that got away" but funny tothink about none the less
