This is not an ideal ECM to run in a 93-97 F-body. The LS1 PCM (24x crank reluctor) is much better suited to the 4th gen F-body.

While not practical for most applicatons, this is a pretty cool example of the LT1 running on today's electronics.

yeah i plan on getting the 24x setup,i know they have been working on the 58x,but the 24x will do just fine

they didnt even use a balancer on the run test, guess they didnt care about the motor lol

that is pretty cool, but how much power do you actually gain from that conversion using the ls1 PCM? or is it just to fine tune your ignition system?

ive heard you can gain 30-50hp...i havent seen a dyno test to prove it or not yet,but regardless i will still be doing it.It will be more reliable, easier to tune

and it ousts the opti!

For as often as the timing cover has been removed on this engine, and that it sees very short, low rpm runs for initial prototyping, it'll be okay without a balancer.

We did a comparison test at TPIS a few months ago with a 396ci LT1. With LT1 PCM, MSD optispark, and high output coil, the engine made 505 hp. After the 24x LS1 PCM conversion, the engine made 520 hp.

If you're going through the expense of doing the conversion for horsepower gains only, you've probably missed the point of using the LS1 PCM. ;)

Bad ass! My Wifes LT1 will eventually get the 24x/ls1 pcm conversion.

kinda of a noob to this so what all is needed to do this swap

You need a 24x Crank and 1x Cam Signal
For the LS1 PCM to work on any V8 engine, it needs the correct crank signal (24x) and cam signal (1x). The 96-newer engines already have a crank sensor, so we relied on the 96-newer timing cover to mount a sensor and allow provision for the 24x crank reluctor.

Do you have an early Small-Block Chevy? Use a 96-newer Vortec timing cover. Install the 24x crank reluctor, install the Vortec timing cover, install the 24x crank sensor, and install the Vortec distributor with sealed cap. This will equip your engine with the crank/cam signals required by the LS1 PCM.

Do you have a 96-97 LT1? Then remove the timing cover, remove the 4x crank reluctor, install the 24x crank reluctor in its place, replace the original 4x crank sensor with the 24x crank sensor, and then install the timing cover. Install our camshaft sensor kit. The cam sensor housing housing bolts/seals in place of the optispark (the optispark is 100% gone). The 1x reluctor is installed to the front of the cam timing sprocket. This will equip your engine with the crank/cam signals required by the LS1 PCM.

Do you have a 92-95 LT1? Get the 96-97 timing cover. Mill down the crankshaft hub the thickness of the 24x crank reluctor (2.5mm) to avoid misalignment of the accessory belt, install the 96-97 LT1 crank key, file the crank key to be flush with the crank so that the crank hub does not crush the key during installation, install the 24x crank reluctor, and install the 96-97 timing cover with 24x crank sensor. Install our camshaft sensor kit. The cam sensor housing bolts/seals in place of the optispark (the optispark is 100% gone). The 1x reluctor is installed to the front of the cam timing sprocket. This will equip your engine with the crank/cam signals required by the LS1 PCM.

You need the LS1 PCM
The 24x crank and 1x cam signals are intended for the LS1 PCM. This includes all Gen 3 LS type PCMs. EFI Connection recommends the 2001-2002 GM# 12200411 LS1 PCM due to its price, availability, and versatility.

You need a wiring harness to support both the LS1 PCM and your car
EFI Connection builds brand new engine harnesses.

You need 8 LS type coils, a harness to connect the coils, and a method of attaching the coils to your engine
Your may consider welding coil mounts to your existing valve covers or consider our coil bracket assemblies. These brackets will fit most center bolt valve cover configurations and clear PCV, oil fill, and breather

Why exactly does the crank need to be milled in 92-95 applications?

The crank does not have to be milled, but the crank hub does (or you can use a 96-97 crank hub). The reluctor (even the GM 4x reluctor) adds thickness between the crank and crank hub that will effectively push out the balancer and crank pulley about 2.5 mil.

Ok so without a mill, the easir way is buy and use a 96-97 Hub? Thanks for the information!

why is the 24x PCM better suited to the LT1 than a 58x? Seems to me like you could only gain from more precision.

edit: nvm, im assuming electronic throttle.

The LT1 is neutrally balanced at the front and externally balanced on the rear. The stock pulley is actually a harmonic dampener rather than a balancer. You can run them without it for cases like this but you would need the hub in place to prevent oil from exiting around the crank snout.

i was really hoping to get 24x done this winter but too many other expenses came up. I have 1 semester of college left so I shouldn't even have it on my mind right now like i do anyway haha.
