I boguht a 1996 Pontiac Firebird Formula with 70k miles on it like a week and a half ago, it failed inspection for an evap sensor code, I took it back because they guaranteed it to pass NJ state inspection, so they replaced the purge solenoid. The day after I got it back the next morning I go to start it the light comes back on. I get pissed and then tell them it came back on, I take another 40 minute drive and I pull in there with the light on turn it off and re-start it the light stays on, they pull it into the garage and 20 minutes later after having it hooked up to an emssions tester and obd 2 scanner they tell me there was no codes at all whatsoever and i tell them the light was JUST on yada yada, they tell me that it wasn't so i leave and i told them its going to come back on and that ill be back. Well anyway the inspection station also said my steering column was loose so they decide to tear it apart where i bought it and replace a lower bearing, and they messed up a wire to the ignition and had to get a new key pattern cut with the same chip and theyput it back together. Well the night that I got it back they didn't hook up my highbeam switch and the light was back on. well tonight, I went to get gas and the car wouldnt start and the securtylight was flashing and needless to say NEITHER of my two newly cut keys work. So now all i want is my god damn money back for this car i just bought because its a piece of crap, since they touched it. What can i do to try to get my money back, i took a loan out for this car also.

I don't know what to do im so pissed right now, i told the guy to pay for a tow truck to come pick it up and that im not paying for it and that it can sit and rot till it gets fixed.

, i told the guy to pay for a tow truck to come pick it up and that im not paying for it and that it can sit and rot till it gets fixed.

The only problem with that is the guy or dealership already got his money.... it does not hurt him for you to threaten not to pay for it.... Make a list and have them fix the items... tell them that you understand that these things can be cmplicated and you are willing to have them take it to a GM dealership as long as they flip the bill..

If you honestly dont want to do that go speak with the bank where you finance it and see if they are willing to help...

If that is not an option get an attorney's advice (CIVIL ATTORNEY)

But dont threaten to not pay for the car... because the guy/dealer WONT CARE....

As is or not, I'm sure theres a lemon law in that state and I believe thats a 30 deal with things of this nature. Not posotive but it wouldn't hurt to look into. Either way, I've delt with some simmular issues but love the smoke rollin from the tires to much to care... I do have access to all the diag. tools and such and that's good for me... either way slow the motor and deal with it without being a dick to the dealer fellow... like was stated before, he/she doesn't give a damn other than a rep that can and will be fixed if you try to hurt it... just roll with the flow my man...

CALL THEM, at least find out if LEMON LAW relates to used cars.... either way they say:

"The firm's litigation philosophy and its approach to all lemon law cases is simple but effective, we strive to make a quick and efficient settlement for our clients, through cost free legal representation"

What if I Bought my Vehicle Used?

First, if you still had any warranty left from the manufacturer when you purchased your vehicle (or your vehicle was "Certified" by the manufacturer or dealer), and you made at least one unsuccessful warranty claim before the warranty ended, you may be entitled to compensation for breach of warranty.

Hes not making warranty claims. I am assuming he bought the car as is though with the verbal guarantee it would pass inspection. The way I see this going down legally is that he bought the car. It left the lot able to pass inspection. Issues arose the dealer did what they thought would make it right and they will eventually quite. Saying legally it is not there issue and for him to pay to have it fixed and at said point there will be a laywer involved. At said point he should just leg it to a state with out inspection Rock on :metal:

well the place I bought it was a used car dealer and a mechainic shop that is ASE certified, nad a pennsylvania inspection station. The car did come with a 30 day powertrain warranty.

He wrote it down on papaer that it would gaurantee to pass inspection so ill bring that with me wf the guy decides to say otherwise.

Sounds to me that they are filling you full of BS. If the CEL was on the day before, it will store a code. Was the inspection station the same place you bought the car from?

No I live in Jersey, so i need to get it inspected in jersey. Thats why they gauranteed it to pass NJ state inspection. I did try to tell them that there was no way that the light coulda gone out and have no codes to be stored in the system, I told them the only way it could have gone out is if they unhooked the battery, but they did that AFTER to fix the loose steering column.. At this point i don't know what to do. I do know that there is a horrbile grinding rubbing sound that comes from the right rear wheel area, and that i think it could be brake related since they told me it just had new rear brakes done, but it makes the sound regardless of whether I'm on the brakes or not going around a turn. I think i could be rear axle related, or a wheel bearing or axle bearing, it only does this after like 20 minutes of driving or so.. the axle may be loose or something. I didn't tell them this at all because I don't want them to work on it I have my own reliable mechanic that does all the work to my '94 Chevy. I don't need them screwing my car up anymore, And I know that the Universal joints are bad too. but thats all i can tell that is bad with this car, for now....

U-Joints and brakes will not be covered under powertrain as they are considered wear items. Go seek legal advice. no one on this forum is going to be able to give you the advice you need. Did you have the car checked out at all by your trusted mechanic ?

This would be a good start, at least then you have someone you can trust telling you what you need.
