You do not need to pull the engine to do so.

You will need to remove the radiator, a/c condenser, fans, accessories, etc... all of the stuff directly in front.

Removing the intake manifold is also somewhat tricky, but not too bad. The bolts in back have to be done by feel.
You WILL run into problems trying to get the timing cover off though. With the engine out of the car, you can easily remove the oil pan and then the timing cover. However, with the engine in the car it is next to impossible to get to all of the oil pan bolts. You will have to remove the first few towards the front of the engine, and then REALLY loosen the rest going towards the back in order to get the front of the pan down far enough to get the cover off. Good luck getting that BIG-ASS rubber gasket that goes under the timing cover to line up squarely with the oil pan, when you have like 1/2" of room to do so. Get yourself some good RTV.

Are you changing valve springs too? If so, i'll tell you a little trick.

remove the radiator, intake manifold, valve covers, opti, water pump, crank pulley and timing chain cover.
