View Full Version : C5 killer . . . ?
Alright I know that C5's are lighter, stiffer and have more power than our F-bodys. But . . . .There is a dumbass at my work that just bought a C5 a couple months ago and is always talking shit :frustrated: Now we've never raced, but I have no doubt he'd win . . . .
So my question is this: What would it take to make my 96 Trans Am a C5 killer. . . NA, no boost no juice?
(keep in mind I'm not talking a Z06 or a modded C5, just your run of the mill C5 that thinks it's king shit)
For mods already on the car see my sig . . .

do you have any track times? i would imagine with traction you are what low 13s or high twelves in ill? he should be about the same i think. but he will probably mph higher. so... if you have the driver mod and he screws up it could just be up in the air for as to how long you can stay ahead of him! lol
but a hot cam car can walk a stock c5 vette pretty easy usually. or at least i have anyways, my aunt used to have one before she traded it in on a C6Z. no i dont like to play with her anymore. i could beat her by probably 3 car lengths too 110 and then by 120 or so she would start to come around me. 4.10s and an auto put me in OD quick and she was still pulling hard.

Actually I've never had my car to the track  So the "driver mod" really would be a toss up . . .
ever considered a cam?
Kinda what I'm asking . . . which one?, what more for suspension?, gear swap?. . . . etc . . . .
I want to KILL  him . . .

To KILL him you will need a low 12 / high 11 car...
Cam and ported heads will be a must. Get an AI 200cc kit and he's toast.

At the track, theres probably less than 2/10ths difference...
The SOTP can LIE when it comes to tq multiplication.
Gears dont make that big of a difference, they just "feel" like they do.

Only if you have the tire for it :D
What year and tranny is this C5?
I don't want juice because I don't want him to be able to say "well if U didn't have nitrous". .
And as far as the 4.10s go . I do have 315s for the rear on the way . . . . But if it doesn't really make a difference as far as times go why loose the gas milage? I drive the car A LOT in the summer. .
Not dumping on the idea . . I'm just new to this and asking questions . . .
C5 is a 1999 m6 btw . . .

Unless the 315's are DR's there not gonna help you at all BTW, ask YZF!
Tire, headers and Cam would be my vote, also I'd throw some Suspension in there for the Hole Shot

Depends where your racing. Track, HWY, Secret spot in mexico? Its gonna make a huge difference on how you mod your car.
My buddy has a C5 ZO6 and I kick his ass at the track by a full second. Top end on the HWY he can kill me. Gears will be the biggest factor.

With your current mods, if he's stock, you should be door to door with him. He'll get you on the top end though.

I pull 22mpg with all my mods and 4.10s.... gotta love 6th gear.

So are you saying that 4.10 Gears are a good idea for streets or for the track? Honestly I'd like to get my car to a track but with all the O.T. I work and the fact that I'm stuck on second . . . I've been trying to get to the track for over a year:doh:

Really? I guess I just assumed C5's where a lot faster. . . . cool :D ! !

If your race on the HWY I would prob stick with a 3.42. If you race from a dig 4.10s all the way. Only prob with 4.10s is youll top out at a lower MPH, but you will get to your top speed faster.

i love my 4.10s! i only have an auto too. definitely cut my top speed down though. i get anywehere from 21-24 hwy mpg. and that usually sitting the cruise on 70. at like 2700-2800 rpm. according to the dash tach. on my laptop on datamaster its 2600. and my car is really loud! but i love every second of it.
now back to the race! lol i would say with the 4.10s and traction you will make it a damn good race till you hit 100 but expect him to start pulling hard. nature of vettes and LS1s. throw a hot cam in it and you should have him no problem. along with the 4.10s and tune of course!
Alright I'm getting the picture :D
But if I cammed my car or did a h/c could I beat him without the gears?

why not do it all? have it fast as hell and driveable! lol but gears will help a 6 spd car a ton. some would say i over geared my car... but my tires are tall so it puts me where i want to be. a set of 26in mickeys on your car and the power and the stock vette is screwed against a H/C package car!
Well to be honest I kinda want my car to be dual, tri . . purpose. I love to drive it in the summer, I do love to kill any rice that might want to play at a stoplight, and I really want to try to make it to an autoX event . . .So I really don't want to go to far in the drag car direction that I start hurting the handling. . . If I'm wrong or have some misconceptions please point them out to me
I'm a newb

I'm in the same boat man I want a street car first, auto x / TT car second, and drag car third.
But I drag race almost every wknd when its warm.
Heres the deal, you can have a GOOD handling Auto X / TT / Road race car that still does well drag racing, but not the other way around.
Several of the mods you do for auto x will compliment lower 60 times, and with a good sticky tire you'll still cut great 60 times.
Set it up for drag only and you could gain a 10th or 2 in the 60, but KILL the corner prowess.
My .02
My buddy is a mutli-championship auto x winner and is helping me set my car up, and this advice comes mostly from him so take it FWIW

I kinda think along the same lines! I'm not quite as big on the whole auto x thing hut with an automatic I shouldn't be! Lol I like and agree with most of what gregrob said. You can set up a car and do just fine in both areas. Most of what had been suggested is gonna make you pretty competative in both categories too!
Well perhaps I should've named this thread "How can I make my car kill a C5 and still handle" but from what I've read 4:10's don't really hurt you on a autoX course, you just use a different gear . . . . Well since we've gone down this road I might as well change my question: I've got the mods in my sig and also have a C6 brake conversion and a set of adjustabel LCA's sitting waiting to be installed, and will be getting the Forgeline wheels in my other thread fairly shortly.
So (besides gears) what would be the next mod for my car that would help the 1/4 mile time but not hurt handling? Not really looking into a H/C package yet so exclude that as well
Thanks for all the help guys ;):peace2:

i think you have now excluded EVERYTHING?? 4:10's and a shot of happy juice is still my vote
i think you have now excluded EVERYTHING?? 4:10's and a shot of happy juice is still my vote
I've eliminated:
1.H/C package
2.laughing gas
3.gears
4.FI
5.stuff in my sig
I haven't elimnated:
1.PHB
2.ported intake
3.Rockers
4.Actual dyno tune (only have a mail order right now)
5.bigger throttle body
6.springs
7.shocks
8.torque arm
9.large jet engine bolted to the back ;)

problem is you have very little hp to gain in the not eliminated group,,all your power is stuck in the eliminated group...
honestly i say give it the drivers mod and practice like hell,,whoop his ass because you can drive better

12-13-2009, 03:25 AM
no need for the TB... RR's and good vavle springs, all the suspension, and lots of weight reduction! plus the tune and you will be set. oh and like stated above, the driver mod!
gregrob
12-13-2009, 04:57 AM
You aint even gonna come close to him without the stuff you've "eliminated"... Dont even try
PHB does nothing for 1/4 mi times just so you know.
Ported intake is a complete waste at your level.
TB is a complete waste at your level.
You're approaching it ass-backwards with no chance of being close to a good running C5.

i say run him as is and since his is new to him maybe he wont be good at racing it,,go somewhere and practice some dig starts,,if you run from a roll he'll eat you up
I so go for the large jet engine bolted to the back
Only one vote for the jet engine :hmm:
Anyway, I know I'm limiting myself here, I'd love to do a H/C package only problem is I'm still looking for a house :disagree: So I don't have a garage to work in. Plus my skill level isn't all that great at wrenching on cars. I know just enought to get me into trouble. . . I turn wrenches for a living just not on cars. I work on these . . .

A jet engine strapped on back could be cool..
Off topic, but what's your job title and do you have a degree/what's it in? Because that's badass.
On topic, even if he's a bit faster, he's still losing because he paid a lot more for his car.. and his car is newer, so even keeping up with it would be insulting :)

i would say from your options that you have not eliminated, best gains would come from TQ arm, shocks/springs. its amazing how much good suspension can help out.
