alright fellas it looks like no racing for me on saturday or anytime soon..... the last time we ran the car we pulled a plug from each bank and took a quick look at em to make sure all was well. car wasn't missing as far as we knew so we figured all was well.....

well today on advice of my electrical guy we decided to do a compression test... we pulled the #2 plug and immediately we were like "OH SHIT".. The grounding strap was completely burned off the plug and the plug was fouled bad with oil.... I had idled the car in the garage a few times since that day and with the plug not firing it just washed the plug down with fuel and oil... it looked bad....

a compression test revealed that we are down another 20 psi from what #2 tested last time which was like two months ago. #2 was 185 and all the others were 205 back then... now it's down to 160 psi and the others are 205.... so that hole is having a serious oil control problem and if I had ran the car on saturday unknowingly it would have DEFINITELY melted down that cylinder probably BAD. So finding it early was a good deal for me. Now I can just replace the piston and reassemble the motor and we should be good to go.... but the pistons are custom ordered and I believe they have to be ordered in sets of 4 at about 500 bucks for 4..... so it's gonna be a bit b4 i can get the motor out and reassembled......

I'm not at all mad at it.. that's racing and the 9.06 makes it one of the fastest LT1's in the world so this motor far exceeded my expectations.... and since i found it before it exploded bad it only needs one piston.... I can't be mad at an engine who pushed a 3400 lb tank to a very low 9.....

So pour out some liquor for my #2 piston this weekend cause she's a dead homie... http://ltxtech.com/forums/images/smilies/cust/gr_wink.gif

Hell Its winter here anyways!! I figure 4 months b4 the car moves out the garage! You have time to fix it!

You trusted your instincts and made the right call. The way I see it 500 and a few weeks is nothing compared to 10,000 + and a few months to build a whole new motor. Let us know when its play time again!

Sucks, but at least you found it now rather than having something let loose full bore doign down the track!

good find, man that would have been a bad day at the track forsure if she had a big meltdown around the 1000' mark!

thanks fellas.... yeah we're pretty sure it's not a head gasket cause i'm not getting any white smoke out the exhaust and the spark plug grounding strap was completely gone which generally will get your piston hot enough to lift the ringland.... also i'm not getting any mix of coolant/oil or oil/coolant so im pretty sure it's not the gasket...

I also use cometic gaskets which rarely blow. it's a thought and a slight possibility but i'm leaning towards it probably being the ringland on #2.

we're gonna make a few changes depending on what goes on with my intake and go from therre... should be a few months and springtime when tracks are open it's back to business....

Good thing you found it before you tried making a couple more passes.
