whats the noticeable difference between getting a speed density tune vs keeping the MAF and getting it tuned? are there any advantages or disadvantages? will one net you more power over the other? any info would be great.

thanks in advance

Brian

Honestly, i would keep the MAF unless you are boosted then being mafless has its benefits.

How so? Mine was supercharged 12lbs made 648 RWHP, I just tuned a Turbo LT with a maf that made 760 RWHP and Bob at EPP have a vette with a maf that also made 760 RWHP...

we noticed with the maf in place with FI it gets maxed out rather quickly at those power levels and it just became a small restriction so why have it in place. both our Lt and Ls cars became maf-less.. just what was observed.....my new set up will be done the same way with TWINS

Ok, this post may be long so bear with me.

MAF is good for what it is. It adjusts well, makes tuning very simple via the MAF tables, ect. But it has it's limitations. Those being in boosted applications. Essentially once you reach a certain airflow, you're maxing out the capability that the MAF has to read airflow and you're playing a guessing game as to anything above that. Period, end of subject. Certain tuners say they have a way to extend the maf tables, but fact of the matter is that once they read that peak airflow hertz, that's it, you're in no mans land. But, with the MAF it's easier to dial in the car, easier to get the AFR's spot on, easier to get better gas mileage, ect. Another downside?? There's a LOT of tuners out there who know how to adjust the tune ONLY via the maf, so what do you think happens when your big heads/cam car has a MAF failure?? That's right, it won't run or will barely run, and probably be on the very dangerous end of things if it does run. So make sure your tuner is coming back in and tweaking the VE tables up after he does the maf tune as a backup.

SD on teh other hand, I'm a big fan of. Takes a component prone to failure and calibration limited out of the way. Not really a restriction (hell, I'm making 760 RWHP on my vette through a stock 78mm MAF, though I prefer to be SD tuned but am picky on who does that) though, they flow plenty for 90% of applications. SD is all calculation based, and it's primary source for fueling is the VE vs. MAP table, which means LOTS and LOTS of logging and tweaking. It can take several days to get a car dialed in. SD's calculations are a cross check of MAP, RPM, IAT, ECT for certain tables, TPS, and O2 feedback. Taking all this into account, and given that the MAP "resets" everytime the key is turned on, you'll fine that properly tuned, it will adjust to temp and altitude changes. This can take several trips back to the tuner for tweaking as the seasons change (higher and lower temps) but once it's completely dialed in, it's dialed IN. Given that it's harder to get dialed in though, fuel mileage typically suffers a bit and may never match that of the MAF car.

Just my $.02. Six one way, half a dozen the other. Personally, I'm a big fan of SD.

Because.....

My car runs better with a SD tune over my MAF tune. The car is more consistent.

I agree with the above to a certain point. Im on the other hand am a fan of the maf. Mafs have come a long way since the mid 80's. You have maf cars making 1000hp now. Abaco has maf's that extend the stock resolution almost double. Now I have had a maf fail and yes the car did run a tad rich..well alot when it went into default mode. I honestly believe its personal choice these days. But a good tuner can do tune both meathods.
