View Full Version : Funny opti story.
So my 94 z was running horribly for the past month. It was backfiring, bogging down, and had no power at all. I narrowed the problem down the the ignition...
I replaced all of the spark plugs twice, bought a new coil, two sets of wires, relocated the coil and icm, etc and etc. I was basically saving the opti for last.
I did all of the research i could and i finally narrowed it down to the opti. I found a good deal for a 95+ opti conversion, ewp, and a double roller chain. Everything brand new. I thought damn i might as well throw a cam while i was in there. I found another deal with a 503, pro mags, ls7 lifters, springs, push rods, etc. So all said done i was going to spend roughly 1200 bucks.
I was going to sell all of my guitars and amps to afford this. I was really hesitant because i didnt want to put myself into debt and i am in college. Also, I was going to miss playing guitar but i had choices to make.
While trying to save some cash i was totally hating on lt1s, specifically the opti. For at least a few weeks every car convo i had with my friends ended with f opti sparks. I was angry and sounded like a ls1 guy....
So today at work i had a random idea to check out my plugs again. They had maybe 500 miles on them. So i started on the even bank and worked my way back. I pulled number 2 out and it was cracked in 4 spots. WTF? Continued on and the other 3 plugs were shot. I was pissed off at myself but relieved.
I was going to spend 1200 bucks and not fix the problem. I learned a very important lesson: triple check and then quadruple check, twice isnt enough. And its not always the optis fault :shame:.
I went out tonight and just gave my car hell. I turned off the radio and just listened to a perfectly running lt1 engine. Everything worked beautifully and i was finally happy with the progress of my car.
So im going to the track on friday to see if finally if i can hit high 8s in the 1/8th.

Lol that would of sucked! It's barely ever the opti. People don't give it the credit it deserves. With our cars it's always some stupid shit like that lol

Wow, don't see that too often?
So, both the 1st set and the 2nd set of new plugs were both "cracked"? What are the odds?
Well, i got the plugs delivered from a local auto parts store at my work, its a small auto shop. The delivery drivers are not necessarily gentle with the orders. They throw them in the back of a truck and haul ass. So im thinking they damaged them on accident.

Funny I found the exact same thing on mine this weekend. I ran a few logs and noticed a mis-fire in the upper RPM's. I assumed becasue I was in a hurry the last time I swapped plugs that I forgot to gap the plugs and 15 psi was blowing out the spark. Turns out I was in such a hurry that when I changed the #5 plug the header tube put such a stress on the porcelian that it cracked when it was in the socket. I had already replaced the coil and was getting ready to start replacing wires when I found the problem.

Thanks! It's funny none of my neighbors are car people and they just can't grasp that I get 4 cars in a 3 car garage. Most of them can't get two cars in their 3 car garages.

At least your neighbors can park in their garage, all mine have a driveway with a 1 or 2 car garage and cant seem to find either most of the time.

Question for you....since you have two of almost the same car......whats it like having a hot rod and having a very similar car for a DD? Was thinking of picking up another 4th gen as DD but figured it would be too similar to what I have.........
Thanks,
Tony

Definitely makes working on the cars much easier. Honestly they really don't cost that much to own. You just need to have a high ceiling in your garage. Mine is 10' 6". I had to get a special garage door and opener in order for me to open and close the garage door with the car on the lift. I absolutely love having it!

I know what you're saying. I sometimes think about that when I'm in the DD that hey, I don't worry near as much when I'm driving this car. I can take it to Lowes and not worry about it in the parking lot, etc. But then when I drive the other one, I remember why I keep both of them. The DD let's me have a quick, fun, carefree car. The other makes my heart pound when I hit the loud pedal. I would recommend having another as a DD to anyone. Mine are different enough that it never get's old driving them. The biggest thing is the DD is an A4, the other an M6. It's much better than driving my truck everyday!

Sounds like fun! I did that with the 94. I worked on the paint and body all winter long and then some. The following winter I did the engine. Let me just warn you if you've never been down the paint/body road it takes a ton of time to make things perfect.

Thanks so much for the answers guys........don't know what I'm doing yet, but my DD is getting old and I was thinking about something like this or a third gen IROC. I like my cars, but I worry about them cause they are nice and I don't enjoy them nearly enough.......figured a daily would be a good fix for this!
Thanks!
Tony
