im getting ready to do a A4 to M6 swap and I want to make sure i get the speedo right. When i first put the trans in it will have the stock 3.23 gears but hopefully in the next few months it will be switched to 3.90s. whats the easiest way to fix this? does any one have any experience with the Dakota digital box? do they work as well as advertised?

Yes Steve, they do work. Remember my install thread from that other site a few years back??? :D

I'll be using the same box for my T56 swap

Just so it's over here too:
Dakota Digital Install Instructions for 93 Firebirds (Camaro Pin out might not be the same but would work the same, just find the correct cluster pin for the speedo input wire):
*this was my own way of doing it, and this is NOT how you MUST do the installation*
Remove the gauge cluster and free up the connector that's left in the dash. Find pin B12 which is the top row, 12th pin from the left. Should be a Green/White striped wire, though the service manual calls for a yellow wire. It was green/white striped on my car. Pin B12 is the pin though. Now trace this wire down under the dash on teh drivers side until you find a point where there's enough room to cut the wire for installation into the SGI-5. You will probably need to extend each end of the VSS wire that you just cut for mounting purposes.
The SGI 5 NEEDS the cleanest power and ground signals it can get. That said, I wired mine directly to the battery with a relay via switched 12V activation, an in-line fuse, and the shortest ground possible. Put the input side (the non-cluster side) of the VSS wire into the SGI 5 port "Sig In." The other side, on my car, went into "Out 4".
I used http://www.f-body.org/gears/ to figure out what RPM I should be pulling at what MPH. I used 2000 RPM's as the basis for all gears. I had the car on jackstands so I simply ran it through a few gears until I got it close, then road tested it. The calibration specs can be found in the SGI-5 manual found here: http://www.dakotadigital.com/pdf/sgi-5c.pdf I think I started with 7 coarse and 14 fine and adjusted from there, but it's been a while.
That should get you up and running. If you need more info let me know.

Doh!!!! That thing was awesome. Here's some others:

Looks like the old F-Body.org calculator here:

awsome.
now is this something that can be easily changed back and forth? basically what i plan on doing is putting new gauges in, a new trans and a new rear. Should I wait until all of this is done before i set the DD box?

What new gauges would you be putting in??? Just put it in and forget it, and I say that because the VSS reads off of the driveshaft speed, so the only way it would be affected would be if you changed the rear gears out.

im just putting over lays in but from what I briefly read it seems you need to take the gauges out to install the DD. I will be switching rear gears with the new rear.

With the A4 to M6 swap you'll only need a new chip calibrated for an M6 car. The overlays, if they're like mine, can be slipped in over the needles. Once you change gears, you will without a doubt need to use the calibration box.

This is an old thread but I figured I'd utilize it vs starting a new one.
I really really don't want to pull my cluster again. I just swapped to a 94 cluster and had it apart many times. Can anyone confirm it will be a green and white stripped wire or the yellow wire?
I just swapped from 2.73s to 3.42s.

When I did Steve's install, I put the box in per recommendation from the PCMforless install and it worked like a freaking champ.
