I wrecked my 96 camaro monday. I'm looking for a car to transplant my good powertrain into. I came across a 93Z but have no clue as to what issues I would have should I pick it up. I wish I could keep my OBDII computer since I already have LT1edit locked to it and I have AutoTAP but, this is a really good deal... I just know nothing about the 93 PCM and what I would be in for should I get it. This 93 car is an auto with the original motor still in it but, has blown head gasket. I would be looking to put my good motor and 6 speed into it. Please help me understand the differences so I can make an informed choice here. Thanks!

Yup, that will explain it.
You could do a wiring harness swap when you put your stuff in it, but it would take some work. Otherwise, the 93 stuff will work fine, it's just a bit more intensive to work with because you have to burn the chips then install it into the computer via piggyback adapter. The 93's are batch fired, but for 99% of people that doesn't make a difference.
If you use everything off of the 96, your opti harness will need a slight modification, you'll not be using your CPS, you'll have to splice your IAC connector from the 96 on to the 93 harness, and I think there's a couple of other minor things.
If you want to swap the wiring harness from the 96 into the 93, I have a service manual for 93's that I can get all the pinouts out of so you can know what to swap where (provided you have the 96 service manual). It's going to be difficult though because you'll have to get under the dash and swap out the OBD port from the 96 into the 93 also to include the wiring.

yikes! sound like it will not be worth it for the amount of work needed to be done. Thanks for the info.

Not necessarily. It's not easy, but if the car is a good deal and in good shape, it would be worth it, and worst case scenario you could just use the 93 harness/computer on it and have it retuned.

Its just one of the first things I stumbled across so far and they are asking $750 for it. I think I'll wait it out and hope find something else. I have an alternate vehicle in the meanwhile. Again thanks for all the info.

Is the 93 posted anywhere? Is it running? Just needs a (or both) headgasket(s)?

its a white 93z hard top at a local junkyard. its an auto and looks to be in okay shape. Needs a good carwash to tell how good/bad the paint is. Lower part of the front bumper plastic is cracked but, nothing to major from what I could tell. All the dudes at the yard told me was that its got a blown motor and they think its the head gasket(s). interior looks clean for a 93 but, had that junkyard smell. has the salad shooter rims. the dash was actually not cracked or broken which was a huge surprise to me. Its not out of the question for me yet but, I would be seeking a way to use my wiring and PCM or do some sort of conversion or buy a painless kit or something to make it work more like my 96.

Sell your PCM and Software, Buy the one for the 93 and be good to go..

Since I'm not holding on to the idea of getting the 93 now... Leth Auto in St. augustine, FL is where the 93 Z28 sits. Was told by the guy inside that its got a blown head gasket. The bottom of the nose piece is cracked but, that is the only major body damage I noticed. phone number for Leth is : 904-824-0303. I'm in there now and again so, I may have been quoted a different price than you'll get,.. hehe.. you know how junkyards can be...

ah its so close... I so want to pick this up but I'd hate to get a trash motor if that's not what's wrong with it

Still, for $750 part it out and make some side cash. If it was closer I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I'd have to pay a bit to get it up to Jax.. it's about an hour drive and it would have to be towed up

Umm, the wiring isn't hard to pull out really. Just yank the engine/trans out of the '93 and put yours in. I took my engine/trans wiring out, clipped all the unneeded ends off (EGR, EVAP, AC, etc), replaced the broken connectors I needed, undid the 4L60E harness, soldered in the T56 stuff, and tossed it back in in a couple hours. Really, its not that hard. I'd be all over putting everything you can from your '96 into a '93. I'm not a big fan of the yellowed gauges and whatnot, but use your gauges from the SS. If you need help with it, just lemme know, I'll do all I can over the computer if you decide to do it.
