i got killed by a cai and ex. 96 cobra..... i ran him a while ago on my stock motor and went door to door till 3rd. i now have the 502 cam springs and some bolt ons. and he killed me by ten plus cars, he is my friend and i know his car has not changed my car is lacking bad, but why.....? starts kinda rough now i'd hate to think its all b/c of a tune, i took my filter off and it was dirty ...really dirty, could this hold back that much power ? input please i am about to cry :( ........

you should have won, you may need a tune, or maybe the cobra had a good driver.

fuel filter did nothing, he is a good driver but still i can tell its lacking a crazy about of power.... crazy..... it doesn't throw me back or anything im so fing lost.................

he has like 265 whp.... the race would tell me i have like 200 flat if not less , wires should be fine i would expect around 300 whp for me after tune but i don't see a tune taking care of the much power. wires are fine . spark pllug gap is at .046

put you plug gap to 35-40. It will make a difference but not that much. A tune on a cam motor could make that much difference but on a 502 I would be surprised. I would pull the plugs check to see if they are fouled and check over the plug wires.

negative, like i said previously, my car felt like it had a huge power loss its like the power is not there and he is a good friend we hang out everyday and do our car work together. we are very very confused

Hey guys, this is dakota's friend with the '96 Cobra. Before you ban, know that I'm not here to bicker. I'm very impressed by your F-bodies, and while they're not my cup of tea, I can certainly respect the numbers you guys make with only a cam swap! Incredible. Anyways, the reason I'm here is to try and help dakota out, because we are both lost. Even I know that his car should rape mine from a 20 roll -- until I get my Kenne Bell atleast! lol

Here's what we know:
-We just swapped in a totally gone through LT1
-According to smell, it's running extremely rich, atleast at idle and regular driving
-We're running 93 octane
-Every once in a while, if the car is hot, it will act weird upon start up (a weird "pinging" noise -- not really detonation though as far as we can tell) until you rev it up to 3-4k
-It periodically stalls directly after a start, hot or cold
-Seems to be mechanically sound
-New fuel filter

Our ideas at this point are mainly fuel related -- maybe an injecter is f*cked and is dumping fuel when it's not supposed to?

Also, he has an LT4 knock module, which is less sensitive than the LT1 from what I've read, but is it possible for some kind of malfunction or misread to occur so that at full throttle it pulls the timing? If it's running far too rich will it pull the timing?

As dakota mentioned, the thing feels like it has 100hp less than it should at WOT, literally. It feels almost the same at half throttle as at full throttle. Help us out here guys, or I'm going to keep bragging that I beat a built LT1 :D. haha j/k (kind of)

Another thought is that we probably gapped the spark plugs a little big for the application (.050). Do you think pre-ignition is a possibility?

a tune for ten plus cars ? a tune may be one of the problems as to why your car is not running right? Is your car throwing any codes?

Check for codes. With a cam swap you'll have less vacum thus causing the fpr to pump more fuel then what is needed. Plug gap on an n/a motor will only be minimal loss at best but if your motor is getting flooded by fuel you could be seeing a significant loss. If you don't have atleast a mail order tune it will never run right.

Make sure your opti is in right (if it's vented) splined one is hard to mess up.

If they are too TIGHT it will hold the valves open and bleed off compression.

There's also the possibility that you installed the cam/crank gears wrong and retarded the timing 1 or 2 teeth, that would make it run like shit.

Check fuel pressure

Run diag codes

Diag opti.

That's all I can think of for now. Check those things out and report back. I want a vid of you walking that cobra stat!

It was my first motor build and my dad has a hook up with a very reliaable machine shop and he showed me how to do everything and stood beside me watching me do everything.... not tuned yet, i can check some codes tomorrow prolly .

If the car is running good and pulling clean and smooth to red line I doubt it would be the opti. If it breaks up or misses it could be.

some new news, pulled the plugs needless to say cyclinder number 6 and 8 were BLACK...... all the others were clean

That would make sense, but would the car run even half decent if two of the cylinders were off? We're going to clean them up and regap them and see what happens. We also swapped those two injectors with 1 and 3 to see if the injectors have an issue. Will update as progress occurs, in the meantime, advice is welcome!!

I had 2 crossed up wires after my cam swap. Actually didnt run two bad except no power! Double checked the firing order and fixed and holy shit did the car come alive.

That could def be it.

i just got on to see that so i haven't checked it, its past midnight and i have high school tomorrow FTL, thanks giving break on monday FTW so hopefully thats when we figure this out, also on plug number 6 the white eletrode was now not centered its off to one side a bit, pre ign.? is that wat causes that? and if it is a crossed wire its mustang boys fault, that was his side. DAMN you taylor.! i knew he would try to pull something ........cobra drivers.

I definitely checked and double checked them, because they look like a bitch to get at with the motor in the car, with all the accessories and headers on. But I really hope that's our issue to be honest. I refuse to believe I built something that slow! haha

I won't be showing my face here much if I screwed that up, though :jest:

thanks so much guys just one last probelm with her , starts fine ..but drive around for a while and shut it off say while im pumping gas and then go to start it again its really slow and hard starting and when it does fire it sometimes just shuts back off in about a second then turn it over again it fires hold the gas on like 1/16 in and it just runs rough as F*ck then outa no where while im keeping it alive it just revs its self to where i am hold the pedal down and i let of it and everything goes to normal. normal idle . normal drive . normal performance. WTF
