Now in all seriousness. My Mother-in-law who lives in Fl is dying of cancer. She has spent all the money she ever had on herself, new clothes, cars, houses, and most importantly to her - cigarettes (2 -3 packs A DAY for 40+ years). She married this nice (but not rich) guy a few years back and now has really went down hill health wise. She has pretty much bled him dry. She has no life insurance (sold them of the money), no will (not that she has any posessions left) , and no plans for her final wishes. My wife has a younger brother and sister. Her brother just bought a small house and got his hours cut back to 25 hrs a week (liscensed electrician). Her sister is married, with 1 kid and her husband works a good job as does she. Problem is they ALWAYS cry poor mouth (dont get me started) My wife(a public school teacher) and I are comfortable, but my bisuness is struggling with sales cause of the Chineese dumping shitty raw materials on the market and trying to undercut us.
I guess the point of all this is, do you feel it is up to the surviving children to pay for the follies of the parents? My parents have pre-paid thier funeral expenses. My Mother-in-law is only 58 years old and her mother is still alive as are all her brothers and sistes, aunts and uncles. So far all my wife and her mother's new husband have come up with is cremation and a small service up here at home. (this is where Walmart may come in). Unfortunatly that idea has gone over like a lead balloon with the rest of the family. Should i just pooint them all to Walmart and say "put up or shut up?" Anyone ever have to deal with a situation like this?

Funeral expences are hella expensive whether its a burial or creamation. If it will releave a financial burdon then by all means go that route.

are you and the wife on the same page??unfortunatly i think your in a lose lose situation..in the end your probably just gonna have to do whatever makes the majority happy or make some enemies within the family(in my case that wouldnt bother me)those deals are tough,,i wish you luck

sorry, couldn't resist.

now in all seriousness, i don't know that i want my family paying a lot of money for my last expenses either. my mom was cremated and is in a cabinet in the mosseleium (sp) of a local cemetary and there is enough room for the rest of us on that shelf. i think when my time comes (if i keep having financial and job issues the rest of my life it might be pretty quick) i think i should just be cremated and put in there. no funeral since i hardly know anyone, no nothing. just burn me and put me up on the shelf. I kind of think funerals are very expensive and i don't know if they are really necessary in all cases.

I've known people who have done it both ways. One of my uncles fathers died 2 years back and he left money, pretty much wrote a story telling where everything is in his house that they would need to know, and even went as far as writing his own will. I was very impressed.

Thats something I think is different for everyone though. Do whatever you guys feel you need to do.

You just realized?

They have been plotting for awhile...

Funeral expenses are already huge though, and cant always be planned for. Id be ok with cremation. I would also try to have my expenses covered before the fact, but thats just me. I dont think it would be nice to leave my family with that.
