How hot does you LT motor run? I got a 160 stat in my car but sometimes on hot days it will get up to almost 230 degrees. Whats a good way to make it run cooler?

You can get it tuned for the fans to come on earlier or get a fan switch.

Mines runs under 180 down the highway and at teh most 210 sitting still.

Any questions regarding operating temperatures in LT1s can be answered by reading here: http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#cooling

If you have any specific questions let me know I have a pretty decent knowledge of the cooling system on LT1s.

160 thermo and mezeire non hd electric pump and mine stays between 170-185

Alvin @pcmforless programmed my fans to come on sooner, but I also tweaked it a bit and made my high fans come on a bit sooner than his tuning

Your car should not be getting that hot with a 160 tstat, it should usually hang somewhere in the area of 170-185 even when sitting still. Only should spike a little above that on HOT HOT days sitting in traffic.

Did you have the fans reprogrammed for the lower tstat? This could be why its getting so hot. If you want to control the temp of your car better, think about getting a manual fan switch or wiring up one yourself.

My fans turn on when my ignition is turned. Does the fan have different settings on it or something? Would it help after i got my car tuned. I think the timing is off barely?

I have a meziere ewp and 160 thermo, with a pcm4less tune and mine will barely budge above 160 when warmed up and stay there no matter how much I whip that ass.

I forgort to mension that when i got a new temp. gauge I put it in my head instead of the water pump. Im sure thats one reason its reading a little hotter, right?

I believe i got most of the air out of the lines. Is there a special kind of antifreeze. I got the regular stuff not the 50/50 crap. Would it matter the my new temp gauge is bolted into the CYCLINDER HEAD instead of the WATER PUMP???

First off... if you don't have 50/50 then....
a) your boiling point will be too low and cause the coolant to boil too fast
b) your block could crack if the outside temperature is below freezing

Second off... yes the temperature gauge for the dash is on the head, which is probably hotter then temperature gauge for the PCM, which is on the waterpump.

I'd flush your coolant put a 50/50 of dexcool (unless your a anti-dexcool... which is for another thread another day) bleed the air from your lines and see where your temp is at. If it's still to high buy a can of water wetter and add it. If it's still to high either something is failing (radiator could be starting to clog... water pump could be failing, thermostat could be stuck, debris blocking radiator from underneath, etc) or just get a fan switch or tune the pcm to kick the fan temps on earlier.

Keep in mind the high fan isn't going to kick on untill 235* so if it's getting hotter than 240* you have a problem. I have my car setup to opperate at 190-210* because I feel that is the best operating temperature for our cars. I wouldn't want my car over 230* with a iron block and aluminum heads.

Hope this helps.

With a 160 T-Stat and a tune for 160 degrees.. Mine runs just a cunt hair above 160. I'd guess no more than 175 idling in traffic.

too cold IMHO. Who tuned it?

The car loves it. It runs better when its cooler. Thus has been proven at the track.

Keith? He typically doesn't tune them that low.

Nope.. more local than Keith. And recently I found out a good friend of mine has everything I would ever need to tune my car. Im stoked for more mods now.

That helps, but i wired it up so when i turn my ignition the fans turn on. Before i start the car. It usually dont run to hot unless its pretty hot out or im beating on it. I will try what you guys said and thanks for the help.

That's pretty ghetto I'd get it tuned via the PCM or a switch.

Um you NEED a 50/50 mixture in there. Just the regular coolant by itself is way to thick. I usually just buy the pre-mixed, cause i know my water at home has shit in it that i dont want in my engine.

Correct, distilled or your asking for trouble later on. 175-180 is NOT too cold for an LT1.
