Ok so i'm 22 and have been turning wrenches since i was 15 and currently gradutaed from WyoTech and have been working in the field the last year and have been in three different shops, just keep getting better offers.
Well i've come to the point where it's hard to get the insentive to work on my owne cars and some times i find my self asking why i ruined my hobby in the first place by making it a carrer. I've been told and would like to think i'm very good for what i do but have been really thinking about going to the local community college and getting out of the auto field all together and make it a hobby again.
I've been working monday-friday at my full time job as a tech and then after work and on the weekends i'm doing side jobs. Even with all this i still can't seem to make enough money to keep ends meet and it's almost caused me to sell my toy and that just kinda pisses me off lol..
Sorry about the long rant..

thats cool, congrats on graduating from wyotech, i always hear about how good that place is.
i was is the same situation you are 4 years ago when i lived in alberta. i had an opportunity to go to the southern alberta institute of technology which is a great school for automotive techs in canada to go to. i decided against it specifically for that same reason. i spent alot of time talking to techs i know and they all used to be such hardcore car guys until they started doing it for a living.
think it scared me into doing something not so direct with wrenching and that was selling parts.
i should add that i have other interests like criminology and psychology but am too afraid to spend the money and make that initial jump into the field. i regret it.
long story short, life is too short to limit yourself to one profession. you're young, so find whatever else makes you happy and just go right into it

Its a shame your saying that, because my good friend (BLUEBOTTLEZ) is the same way.... honestly he is the best at what he does.... He impresses me everyday Im at the garage and I always walk away learning something new.....
He has gotten to the point where he wants something else in life now because he is tired of working on cars. As my friend, I support him altho the automotive industry will lose an asset, who cared about doing shit right the first time and making sure EVERY customer and friend were happy.
I here the same personality in you, and i wish you the best knowing that if you have that much confidence in yourself, you always have your "hobby" to fall back on if you chose to walk away from it as a career... Good Luck.

I left the field and never looked back. I have plenty of offers for side work. I take the ones that interest me and pocket some extra loot.

Try something else. You can always come back to where you are if it doesn't work out. You're only 22 so get with the program and don't let yourself get stuck. You could be an engineer

Did you minor in anything at WyoTech?
That may be something for you to look at. Mess around with cars nothing to technical day in and day out and pretty good pay.

I was in your shoes 3years ago, I worked for BMW (still have Master Tech status) and had been building cars since high school - all GM Fbody's and one vette. I never wanted to wrench on my TA after completely rebuilding the drive train and interior replacement as all I did was work on other peoples cars. I went back to school "again" and got into IT network engineering as a career, now I don't mind playing with my car again but it did kill some of the thrill I use to enjoy from working on my toy. Good luck,

Well i've been thinking about this for a while and i think that right there should have told me to get out.. I feel like i'm in to deep with tool payments to just go back to college full time so i think i'm going to talk to the local CC and try to start some night classes.. Not sure what in yet but turning wrenches isn't as fun as it used to be.. Use to love it, and now it's just stressfull..

I am in your shoes as well i am 29 and have been bustin knuckles since i was 15 and i am pretty well over it. I love workin on cars but doing it for living makes me not want to work on my own stuff. I am trying for a change and have been workin pretty hard to do so. I work and manage a family owned shop my dad owns it, i can come back if i want and i can work on the side a little if i miss it to much i guess.

Yeah i loved working on cars prior to school but once i turned it into a career it all changes.. I've noticed after talking to numerous techs that i worked with they feel the same why, so instead of letting this go on i have contacted Front Range Community College and leanign towards something to do with busines, accounting or welding..
It's been a tough choice but and a good learning experience but i feel like if i don't change the situation now i never will..
Thanks for all of your inputs and insights but i feel like i've made a good choice for my future..

Id take a semester and get all your general educations out of the way. You will need them anyways and this will give you a few more months before you dive right into a different profession

I totally agree with you buddy ! Now you see why I was always ranting about not
having the drive to mod my own cars, because the career I was in killed my drive
completely :( Best of luck !
