Just looking for opinions on what brand to get, I heard richmonds whine, just wondering what brand you guys are running, and what else is needed to do the change?

I have richmond 3.73's and they don't whine at all. The place that put them in jokingly said there must be something wrong with them since they don't lol. I've always heard Motive was good.

And you will have to get your car tuned for the gears because your speedo is going to be way off.

All gears will whine if not set up correctly. Richmond or Motive are good choices. I prefer Motive over Richmond, we sell both at work and Motive has better service IMO.

Motive gear w/ install kit. Check your axle bearings and seals when you're in there.

The whining is not just from the gears being installed incorrectly. Richmonds are known to have a slightly higher amount of nickel in them which makes them softer (better for a hard launch), which makes them less brittle. I have a dana60 setup directly from Strange Engineering and it whines a bit. I also have no rear carpet so it can be loud at times. Does it bother me? Nope, not one bit. It sounds pretty damn cool actually.

isnt motive a brand from GM? I was looking into those, so I will need an install kit?

I've always had good luck with Motive, but I've never used anything else to compare em to.

In my car the STRANGE gears have held up much better than the Richmonds that were in it before.

They snapped like a fat ladys ankle.

I'd go for Strange or Motive. Stay away from Richmond

richmond released a cheaper line called excel-they're half the price and they'll only handle up to 450 hp, they're made in india.
were they those ones?

you could just do the gears an the install kit, all the other stuff is extra to support everything from breaking, but then again its the 10 bolt.

I have 4.10 motives in mine and they are fine. They were in their when I bought the car but Ive had no problems with them yet. Alot of guys use richmond and strange its kinda like a user preference Ive never heard anybody having problems with richmond except the whine complaint.

Hi,I saw that you were looking to do a cheap gear swap.I don't know if you would want to do what I did,but I went to a salvage yard called Pull A Part(there is one in Charlotte) and I got a GM 4.10 gear out of a 94 S10.I got the whole rear end for about $65 of course you have to pull it yourself. All of my bearings looked good so I removed my 3.42 and installed the 4.10 in my Bird and I was good to go and I only spent $75 all together.

Doesn't putting 4:10 gears in, basically suck all of your gas mileage?

I have yet to put mine in, from what I read in a m6 it isn't to bad. 65mph is at 2k rpm instead of 1.5k with stock gears.

I want to say 21-2200ish in 6th gear. Car is gone for the winter so I'm not really positive on that.

Looks like I was right. According to that chart it's 2000rpm @ 74mph. If I take it to my 6800 redline I can go 252mph in 6th gear
