View Full Version : Starting problems after serp. belt replacement...

I posted this on another forum, but I'm hoping to better my chances of a diagnosis of my problem by posting it here as well.

I switched out my old cracked serp. belt on my '97 Formula for a fresh one today with the help of a friend, and following this replacement my car will not start. When I turn the key I just hear continuous "clicks". Simultaneously the lights on my dash board flicker on and off. Figuring it was a battery problem (and I'm still hoping that's all it is) I tried to jump the car but it seemed like power either wasn't getting through to the battery or it just wasn't helping.

I noticed the alternator is not spinning when I try to start the car. On one attempt the alternator spun very slowly and for only one revolution.

I'm wondering if anyone can help diagnose this problem and give me some tips on what to look for or tamper with the solve this problem.

Thanks a lot.

Unless you disconnected the negative for some reason and didn't get a good connection.. I don't see how a belt replacement could cause any harm like this.. You just used the tensioner to get the belt off/on, correct?

yeah something must of came loose. Check the cables and the wire going to the alternator. Check battery

Correct, I'll check my connections I suppose it's possible the guy I was working on it with may have disconnected the battery but I'm quite sure he would have told me had he done that.

I'm thinking it's just a bad battery because my voltmeter is only reading 10 or less when the power is on.

It's an auto. I'll just give it a charge tonight and see if that helps me at least get her started up to bring her down the street to tuffy auto. If not I'll just replace the battery.

Thanks for all the answers.
