I use the 160* Hypertech thermostat. It is Hypertech #1008 I think. You can find them on the web for less than $25. Just make sure you get the one for the LT-1. It IS DIFFERENT than a SBC thermostat. Also may want to wire your fans to a switch, or get the fan temps changed with a tune to match the stat you get.

What do you gain if you wire your fans or get the temps changed? What if you don't do it?

You run hotter, heat soak = less power

He just bought the car and it runs pretty hot so I was the one that told him to get the thermostat. I also told him to clean off the motor and engine bay since it's coated with a nice layer of dirt. Is there anything else he can do to hopefully clear up some heat?

ive seen them from around $20 and up. their not to hard to do either if you know how to plumb steel lines. they got more expensive if you get a cooler with a fan. i suggest gettin one with a fan for the extra air flow

Imho just go to the parts store and get one. I would personally stick with a 180 so your oil gets up to temp and burns off the extra hydrocarbons stuck in the oil pan. Dont know how cold it gets by you but Ive had a car with a 160 thermo and it was worthless in the winter for heat.
Also your fans are still going to kick on at a temperature higher than your thermostat anyways so you may not see much of a difference until you get a tune to lower the fan on. I do not recall the factory preset maybe someone else will chime in with that

Just go to a parts store don't need to pay shipping on a 10-15 dollar piece

the stock fans come on at 226*.............. that is not good............. keep that lower, i recomment getting the fans hooked up to a switch. and getting a 160* thermo.. i have the 160 and it will still get up to 200 dagrees if i keep the fans off.

I have a 160 thermostat in my car, and I have an over ride switch with a high/low setting (I never use it) and my car is ALWAYS running at a steady 180-190....
I love it!

Not true, If ambient temperature is 20 degrees and say he has a 160 thermo and driving down the road that car is going to stay cool as all hell. I know from experience and we have some bad winters where I am. I couldnt figure out why the hell I had no heat until January I finally saw the previous owner had a 160 thermo in the car

Idk what it was about my old camaro, Either is sat for 30 min waiting to warm up or driving it you only had luke warm heat and it sucked. putting a stock thermo in that car was the best thing I ever did . iirc I made the g/f go drive around in snow for an hour just cause the heat was so great.
