Lets assume you pul alot of work into getting into the career you were in what ever it may be.... IN THIS CASE LETS ASSUME ITS LAW ENFORCEMENT.... and a person asks you a question which you feel demeans the efforts, and hurdles you over came.... WOULD YOU BE OFFEDED???

I AM GOING TO POST UP OUR CONVERSATION: and YOU TELL ME:

popo8

HIM:

this might seem random, but what did you have to do to become a cop? i've always wondered and am now considering it as a job during college.

popo8

ME:

What do you mean A JOB DURING COLLEGE? You mean something you wana do on the side while in school??? Or you mean that while you are in college , that got you thinking about being a Cop....?

popo8

HIM:

haha on the side while in school

popo8

ME:

Ok, lets see. I graduated high school , went to college where I dual majored in Criminal Justice.... I then put myself through the Police Academy which at that time was $2500, but now its around 5k. After graduating the 16 week school 2nd in my class (the Police Academy Is now twice as long)... I started applying for Police Departments, because its not like working at BK.... you wait till PD's are hiring then pay for an application and compete against alot of people (as little as 30 as manny as 1000) for one or two positions.... then as long as your good enough to pass every step of the hiring process.... application, written test, oral interview, physical agility, poligraph, back ground, and psychological...... assuming you were able to pass all of those steps... all you need to do is hope that your better than everyone else....

Couldn't get that all in on one post?

Edit: and no, I wouldn't. I'd just point out everything you did. I'm not easily offended though.

I wouldn't think thats offensive. He probably justs wants to know what it takes to be a cop and whether or not its right for him...

popo8

HIM:

i didn't know it was that intensive. if you don't mind me asking, how long did it take you from when you graduated the academy till when you got hired?

popo8
09-20-2009, 11:42 PM
ME:

Well I graduate and had already been applying with police departments while i was in the academy.... Ultimatly, I applied with 26 different police Departments (PA has alot of individual depts) and I had 16 job offers.

But from the day i picked up the application for the dept I work at till the day I started, was 11 months....

I probably could have, but Im a little OCD when it comes to finding a system to be organized and , individual posts is what came to me. Sorry if it was more complicated. I just feel at one point it is someone who just wantes to know.... another view is, THIS GUY THINKS WHAT I DO, IS SOMETHING YOU PICK UP AN APP FOR AN WORK AS WHILE YOU GO TO COLLEGE....

I appreciate you not putting my name out there. i honestly didn't intend for you to be offended. i'm in high school now and really don't know what to do with my life. being a cop has always interested me, so i thought id see what you had to go through to get where you are.

THATS IT!!! thats the feeling that makes me "offended"... thats me though and I just wanna see if I was out of line. Im not saying, I am some NASA rocket science....

But then again I worked hard to be the top of my class and the best at what I can do... and to think it can be a SIDE JOB.... thats what tweaked me.

thats the thing. when i was that age i was such an idiot. i think most of us were back then. Its just the way it is and has always been unless you grew up in the 50's. I understand how you feel, as im trying to be a career firefighter and its pretty much the same process(btw i did pass that polygraph) and people just dont understand not only how long the process is but why someone would continouly go through that kind of torture. most of the processes iv been in usually last 6-12 months to go through the steps and its mainly due to the fact that there are some many people applying for just a few jobs. in my case right now its about 500 people and now were just down to a few for 7 jobs and just had my panel interview and now waiting on conditional offer for employment. you go through alot of stress and emotional roller coaster for these positions that youll defend it till you die!

That would annoy me also. If you are going to ask, thats one thing, but that was just kind of stupid on that persons part to come off like that.

A friend of mine has been trying to get a job as a police officer for the past 2 years. IDK how well he did at his academy, but he's been working his ass off trying to get in.

It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, and I can definately see why you are annoyed.

I 'd when I saw it as a side job also. That would be one hell of a part time job!

I'd be offended if he were actually IN college, but as long as they're a high school kid.. I mean, he's an idiot -- that's all there is to it.

Of course, I would never have assumed something that idiotic when I was 17..

I give you the go ahead to kick his ass :secret:

maybe he got the idea that you don't need a great deal of education in the realm of criminal justice because he has dealt with the abundant amount of officers who enforce laws they cannot explain or rationalize. i really hope you are more open minded than to be "offended" by the ignorance of a teenager.

I would definately take it personal however not to a level in-which i would become overly defensive..(not saying you are at all) Many feel you just take a class or two get a gun, qualify with it then they dress you up in a uniform and a BPV and send you out to represent! What some do not realize is the amount of dedication & financial availability it takes to be in the running for this PROFESSION.

The comment on a job to do while in college, pffft!! he would not even be considered to be able to sweep a hallway in the PD!

If one should happen to want a career in LAW ENFORCEMENT i strongly suggest going to college and take CJ and CL and the prereqs then fill out applications to work in the Detentiion Facility. Become a CO while going to school and it will make your life easier in becoming a Law Enforcement Agent...This is not a "tie you over job" while going to college it is a respected position in the community!

I have not personally met Popo8 or any of the other Officers we have amongst us yet, however there is a respect that carries to all......

Popo8, the reason you feel the way you do is because you know what you have done to accomplish your profession! I am sure from the topics you have made threads on and comments you have made show me you have a great passion for your profession as long as you remember why you became an Officer will keep you a Distinguished Officer!

Ha! Popo your job is easy! Driving someone elses car, having a loaded gun, telling people to shut up, beating up someone then charging THEM for the assault. I'm going to apply for a police job as soon as I finish T.A.S.K.

Kinda what I was thinking. I would understand being a somewhat offended, but I know I was very nieve at 17. This person might be very book smart, but common sense may be lacking a little. How you handled it is very respectable. You informed him on how hard it is to become an officer and all the steps it takes instead of lecturing or getting hateful about it. Kudos.

You are probably a better man than most of the policemen i have had the unfortunate chance to meet. Ideally, police are supposed to serve and help the public but it has turned into a business where im from, a very profitable organization. I have had the chance to do a ride along with a very good cop, and we took every opportunity to help the people we ran into, no tickets no arrests. I just dont think it is fair that another human being is able to have the discretion to pick and choose through a bunch of BULLSHIT LAWS to be able to directly influence my life. The public has come to have a negative outlook on police officers, because unless we are in trouble or need help (which is rare), all they do is harass us for going 5 mph fast on a road that should have the speed limit raised 20 mph, etc. I cant tell you how many times i have been pulled out of my car and been searched, had my car searched, field tested and just as a slap in the face after finding out im doing nothing wrong they give me a ticket for no front license plate. I dont have a problem with police, but in the academy they should root out all of the individuals unfit for a job that requires as much compassion and understanding as police work does. PUBLIC SAFETY IS NOT A BUSINESS

WOW
Some of the things in this post are a bit out there, allow me to pick through it a bit...5mph above a posted speed limit is still speeding! causes probable cause for a stop. your plate has been run and more than likely dispatch has notified the Officer that you have had been searched due to a reason that will now become the discretion of the Officer again for his safety as well as your own. As far as the academy goes, many applicants are weeded out long before they even reach the academy along with a bunch more that do not make the cut.....One thing to remember after the training you will have many that will go about their job thier own way or the way a situation dictates. I will not deny the abundance of bad apples in a bunch. An Officer can have as much compassion as anyone else, however that very Officer has a job to do.
