View Full Version : A not so good day at the track

Okay the start clicks a couple times before I leave the house so I grab a rebuilt LT1 starter to take with. Get to the track every thing seems fine make the first pass.

1.369 60'
6.065 1/8 mile @ 113.98
9.522 1/4 mile @ 141.22

Get back to the pits. Everything seems fine. Checked the plugs bottle pressure was low, which goes with the rich plugs. Get the bottle heater going. Decide it's time for the next run. Starter kicks back almost seems like it wasn't going to start. Get up in the staging lines. I'm up so I open the bottle strap in but the starter died.
Push it back. Go get another starter put it on. The motor starts but seems to want to kick back. The car has not done this before. Check the distibuter and crank trigger everything seems tight so I pull into the lanes. When I had to start the car up.

Boom

It starts up after that revs cleanly. Didn't think much of it.(Which was a mistake.) I pull up do a decent burnout. Stage bring it up on the brake. Pull a 1.386, with the car just feeling a little more violent then last week.
Car goes left then right back left I let up on come close to the wall. Drive back to the pits and open the hood. I can hear the nitrous leak. Look down at the headers. :frustrated: Water dripping out from in betwwen the block and heads. This was on the drivers side. Walk over to the passenger. Water leaking in between the head and block. Lifted both heads and about drove the car into the wall.

I will be interested in seeing what happened to the nitrous soleniod. If there is dirt or debree in it, it was my mistake some how. If the plunger is screwed up there is no real run time on them and this is going to be a costly mistake. So I may be ordering 6 new soleniods if the problem isn't debree. Plus the bottles will be mounted in an up right mount in the passenger seat or in place of the seat. I will no longer leave the bottle on longer then neccessary.

Know the question is how much damage did the motor take?

Damn sorry to hear that man. I pushed one last year. Motor is still hurt but running good ;) Probably 2-3 tenths slower then it could be. I am sure number eight has is a hurt ringland.

Good luck man I hope it works out :D

That sucks! At least the car didn't find the wall, so I guess you could say "it could have been worse". Anyway glad you and the car are ok, now you have an excuse to spend more money you probably don't have. That's my problem every time. Good Luck!

So if I understand...you had a nitrous leak through one of your silinoids that leaked into the motor?

Thats a rough night!

My night out went smooth...just didnt pick up the ET I wanted:frustrated: I put some timing back into the car and ran race gas...thinking good for a .10th or 2...but nothing. Couldnt get my 60' where it needed to be....last pass the car wouldnt MPH. Oh well?

Well it is as I suspected. Only had 60# in six cylinders so it's time to pull it. What I'm scared of if it can stretch all those head suds what did it do to the bottom end? The nitrous soleniod was leaking too.

What head gaskets you use? I would not be afraid of the bolts. Check your decks on both the heads and block and put a new set of gaskets in ;)

once you get it running again get the heat cycles done and doe the compression and leak downs again. unless you want to tear it down now that will tell the story on the pistons and rings.

Good luck man!

I had cometic gaskets in it. I'm considering doing just what you said new gaskets and go. But I got a lot of money in the bottome end. I don't want to take a chance of just looking at the top end and running it if something isn't right down below. When it backfired it came out from the bottom of the car. So the main explosion happened in the cylinders and not in or thru the intake like most cars at the starting line.

Still undecided what to do. It would be nice to tear the heads off and still be able to race this Fridays Midnight Mayhem(street drags)

Man that's no good.I watched a fox body stang blow his intake through his nice cowl hood. The car died on him at the line and not even thinking about it he went WOT to start it... you can pretty much imagine how that went...

Yeah that sucks man, better to be safe than sorry if you have alot of cash into that bottom end (which I am sure you do).

Well the motor is out. I think it is going to need some bearings. I haven't pulled the heads yet, but looking down the exhaust valve it looks like the set of wiseco pistons got peppered a little. I may just throw some rings and bearings in it and see how long it will hold up. Not quite sure yet. Have to open it up.

Well I'm running and I'm headed to the track in the morning. No test and tune tommorrow though. Bracket racing event at the track I will still go for one decent pass on the spray then probably N/A unless their filling bottles.

First pass off the the trailer the car went 10.57 @128 N/A shifting at 7500. Since I was bracket racing I didn 't touch anything other then changing the shift points 8000 netted a 10.65 @ 128 60' was .040 slower. Shifting at 7300 netted a 10.64 @128 with the 60' being .040 slower then the first pass.

Dialed in a 10.6 and ran a 10.64 first round of eleminations but red lighted by .060 of a second. I need a little practice releasing the button.

Adding six inches of rubber to the back of the car next week, with afco front shocks, and maybee the chute. I just don't know anything about packing the laundry :secret:

Great runs anyways man, what happened to the car last time? Did you ever find out?

Got lucky just lifted the heads do to the back fire. One cylinder may down a little but I wasn't going to leave it down till next year. The studs are stronger then the alluminum heads so the alluminum gives or compresses.

I'm glad every thing was good in the bottom end. I have a fair scratch in one cylinder. I still can't beleave the first pass after putting it back together was within .005 of a second of the fastest N/A pass before. The biggest spread between the 7 or 8 passes I made was a .081 of a second. I just have to get the reaction times consistant.

Afco shipped me the wrong front shocks. One is right their just assembed wrong the other one has the wrong size bearing in it so I can't bolt it on. Which sucks but the new street tires are on. Added 4 inches of rubber to the back of the car. The chute is ordered the mount has been on the car since the cage went in.

Sorry about the crappy cell phone pics the wife has the camera.
