My two kids are begging me for a cat. We found a couple of cute cats at petsmart today and they haven't stopped begging. My son turns 10 in a couple of weeks and I thought about getting him one for his birthday. I've never owned a cat. I've never really liked them except when they were at someone elses house. You know, pet 'em and leave 'em there.

Is a cat a good pet or no?

I used to have two cats... before my allergies got bad.... a blind one, that I named STUPID, and a stupid one that I named CORKEY. they were great. A bit of advice, get them allready litter box trained.... IE, raised for a little with the mother who showed em where to GO.

If not get ready to pick up dookie....

They're good pets. Always had them. We currently have 5.

1-2 is typically ok. If you get just one, show it attention. If you don't have the ability for daily attention, a companion is a good thing. 3+ and you're asking for territory issues, though you can deal with those if you are patient.

Make sure if it's a male you get that he's fixed, or if a kitten, have him fixed prior to six months. Very low chance of spraying. Don't get a female going off of the assumption that they don't spray, a low percentage of them do too. We ended up with a female that was part of a 5% population of spayed females that sprays....not fun.

Clean litter box every 1-2 days........kittah's like clean poo poo boxes. If you let it get too dirty, don't be surprised to find a surprise elsewhere.

Get the cat a couple of scratching boxes (the cardboard things). They'll use it, you'll thank them, and your couches won't suffer.

I used to have a cat. My parents had him before I was born and the cat died when I was like 7. I guess he lived for like 15 years or something.

Theyre pretty cool pets. I'm more of a dog person, but I like cats too. Theyre a lot more independent than dogs are. My car used to do its own thing for hours on end, unlike my German Shepard who always follows me around (he's literally sitting next to me right now sleeping).

Cats are a lot easier to take care of also after theyre trained to do their business in the litter box. Thats just my opinion.

We have 4 at my house and I like having them around, they're entertaining if anything, Ive had one cat for 15 and a half years and she still runs around like she's 5, but I would say cats are good pets.............just make sure noone in ur house is allergic to them

Cats are excellent pets. You don't need to worry about letting them out or feeding them or anything. If you want to leave for a day or two, just load up the food bowl, water bowl, and clean the litter box, done.

With 2 kids I would suggest something exotic like a Bengal cat. Google "bengal cat" and you'll see what I mean. They are a domesticated mix with Leopard in them. They have the Leopard spots on their coats and have amazing jumping ability and energy for the kids. You can expect to pay about $500 for on from a breeder, but every now and then you'll get lucky and find them on craigslist in your area.

i've always had cats since i was born, a year ago i adopted a kitten and named him chevelle-he's an indoor cat, so i brush him like a maniac but he loves it-trick is you gotta start brushing them when theyre young-he doesnt shed because of it. very independant, very entertaining, give them a rubber band and they're set for hours! a scratching post and litter box is a good idea though.

Those are super cool cats, very beautiful, and as much as I'd love to get one I never will because there's more unfortunately animals in shelters that need homes.

Keep an eye out at your local SPCA and whatnot. Every blue moon or so you will find one, but they will be adopted very quickly. Craigslist is your best bet for a Bengal. If you get a cat from your local SPCA usually they will come with a coupon for a free 1st vet visit within 10 days of adoption. There will be a list of accepted vets in your area.

I live right down the street from an exotic pet place, about 10 years ago a friend of mine purchased a BENGAL, and spent 850.....

My wife and I just went and looked at one at PetSmart. It was very sweet. It shed like crazy though. I thooght mabybe it was because it had ben penned up in that little box for a week. I mean it came off in clumps. Is that normal? I'm not sure I can handle it if it always sheds like that.

NEVER get a pet at the pet store! Those are the animals you see on the news that are getting raided because there are tons of animals crammed into tiny spaces with all kinds of diseases.. :puke: People breed them by the dozens, then sell them to the pet stores...:disagree:

The Humane Society or your local animal shelter is your best bet to find a good cat! Most of them should be litter trained and are already friendly and they have their shots and are neutered/Spayed.

On another note, cats do shed a lot and some of them do shed like crazy. I dunno about in clumps though..that don't sound right..

Oh and they also claw your furniture.

Well, the rescued cats have their shots and are healthy and spayed/neutered after they are rescued. Pet store animals aren't healthy.

The petsmart program is all shelter kitties. That's a GOOD thing. Petsmart doesn't sell cats, they host cats from local shelters for adoption.

Cats shed when stressed, so what you're seeing is normal. Get it into a comfortable environment and some time to adjust and the shedding will take a nose dive.
