I've been putting my interior back together and came across the fuel pump relay. Figured it wouldn't hurt to wire in a switch. What is the best method of doing this? I've searched the various boards for an easy answer, but all of the replies have been vague. They seem to get side-tracked and go off on neutral safety switch, starter, ignition, etc tangents. I just want to make sure it would be done properly / safely.

Thanks.

Do you want a switch to just shut off power to the fuel pump or shut down the entire car. If you doing it for racing, the switch must shut off power to the entire car. If you just want to shut off the pump pick up a heavy duty toggle and wire it in line to the power on the relay. just use the same gauge wire as the power to the relay 10 gauge maybe? If you have a Racetronix upgrade kit it wuld be pretty easy to do, you might want to look into that if your gonna be playing with fuel pump wires! What's your reason for doing this, the only thing I could see from the fuel pump not comming on is as an anti-theft device.

That was pretty much it. Probably a good idea for me to gear it more toward the racing application though. I'll look into that too. I think all I have on hand is a 20 amp toggle, would that do it, or should I find a larger one?

Hopefully someone else will chime in cause I'm no good with amps and switch ratings. I'm gonna guess that would be fine, but I hate to see ya burn down your car on my advice! I'm not trying to push it on ya but the Racetronix kit puts a relay at the rear of the car and has a main wire you run under the car to the battery to power the fuel system. It's shown to increase power by not letting voltage drop at the pump durring WOT and that would allow you to route the wire where it's easist for you to install a switch between the battrey and relay.

This would only shut off the fuel system and prevent starts when off, NOT NHRA legal. If your battery is still under the hood you do not have to worry about a shut off switch. They are only required when the battery is relocated.

Good info. Thanks! If anyone else can could confirm the toggle would be sufficient...that'd be great. I'd be interested to know about the fuel pump relay's specifics just for future reference anyway.

I'm in a bit of a financial bind at the moment, but relocating the batter is on the to do list. I'll go ahead and make note of the Racetronix kit as well.

can anyone expand on this? im thinking of installing the racetronix harness for my 255 pump.. my key no longer kicks on the pump.. if i wanted to install this harness and put a switch in the car would it allow me to switch the pump on and off? or does it still retain the key being the switch?
