Woohoo! I have an interview at one of the most respected names in the automotive industry!! No it's not Rousch or Lingenfelter or even Saleen it's better than that! AUTOZONE!! haha! Ok maybe it's not that good but at least it's an interview for a job right? At least it will get me by during these times. That is, of course, if I get the job. Wish me luck! :D

Be prepared for the suck. I just quit that joint (part time job) after almost 2 years. The ONLY thing that made it bearable was that I didn't give two shits about the job and would willing tell off a customer if they were being a prick. I had it kind of good because my boss knew I know my shit and was an asset, so I always managed to escape unscathed (not saying I didn't care about the job, I had loyal customers who followed me when I moved stores, I just had no tolerance for arrogant "I am better than you because I dno't work here" customers, and those that were complete idiots.)

AutoZone as a company could be better too. MAKE sure you get there on time, they went to a jackassed points system, and if you get 12 points you're outta there. Late, called out, ect, are all worth points. They're going to pressure you to upsell and (I call it) companion sell extra's and worthless crap because it's the weekly concentration item (wait til' you try asking every customer if they want to purchase a $4 tire pressure gauge because it's on sale).

Be prepared to get shit on. It can be a fun job, but the area you work will make or break it. Typically I'll break down customers as follows:

The "I have money" type -- They want everything done for them, from pulling oil off the shelf to changing their battery. These ones I have ZERO sympathy for. No, I am not changing your battery in the rain or sub-zero midwest winter temps. The oil and tranny fluid is on the back wall, this is what you need, this is not a full service store.

The smart "DIYer" -- Good people. Know what they're doing. Polite, know what they need, will bs cars with you.

The dumb "DIYer" -- Bad customers. Think they know what they want, get pissed at you for selling them the wrong part. Call the store multiple times about "why won't my truck start" and then get all kinds of attitude when you tell them you can't diagnose something liek that over the phone and to call a shop.

The thieving bastards -- Sadly, I never caught one, but had intentions of planting the first one I caught into the soda machine by the door.

I can go on if necessary. :shiner:

One positive note: If you stick with it, after a year -- TAKE THE STOCK OPTIONS. That's free money because you get the lowest closing price on either the first or last day of that quarter at 85% of the close, and can sell in 1 year (or if you quit like I did, you can sell immediately). I made over 50% on my shares in the past year.

i agree with this, a hundred percent, except i'm at more of a disadvantage because i'm a girl, so i find i have to prove myself more so people will buy from me instead of the old senile guy who works beside me. course i've been doing this for 4 years so i think its pretty safe to say that though i'm still learning, i do know my shit.
but ya it does depend on what type of person you are, you'll enjoy the job if you like interacting with different people and buy alot of parts(discount, baby!)
anyways, good luck, it's exciting starting somewhere new

Lucky. I want to work at an autozone or car related store, but all those places you have to be 18.

I refuse to go to AutoZones now. I've had them sell me the wrong part TWICE and refuse to replace it. I go to Checkers (O'Reillys) now instead.

Good luck I worked at Parts America for about a year my senior year of High School. It was great for a part time job, I just didn't like the push to sell unneeded and very cheap crap. I've had Autozone sell me brake pads and the guy say's "here ya go" as he throws in a little packet of the anti seize/ no squeal crap hanging next to the register. I'm thinkin cool saved me a buck, when I get home the bastard charged me for 3 of em! Just one of those things that gets under your skin, I wasn't gonna drive 6 miles to yell about $3 so I sat at home and replaced my brakes pissed off! I guess that could happen anywhere, just remember the employee makes the company not the other way around! Anyway a job is a job so good luck again and at least if you get it you can lookup prices for all kinds of stuff for you car, that's what I did when it was slow! The employee discount helps too!

Full story please. That company is hell bent on replacing anything you bring in the store.

I never go to the one in our town either, bunch of idiots working there. O'reillys is far superior--at least in Pryor Oklahoma. Even though they mixed me the wrong paint a couple months ago... but they are replacing it!

But nice on the interview, when do you hear back??

Autozone is 20% employee except for Oil and a few other normal maintenance items, and anything VDP you don't get a discount on either.
