this may be a stupid question, but, is power shifting bad for your clutch or is they a certain way to do it that it is not

Essentially it's like dumping the clutch a little each time you shift. Which will wear out the clutch faster than it would in a lift shift. I've never power shifted my car, it doesn't have a rev limiter! Yikes.

No doubt about it, it is harder on the clutch. It is the price you pay when driving the car to its potential.

The quicker you stab the clutch and release it, the less it will flare and slip on engagement.

x3 -- It's definitely harder on the clutch.

What? My 92 sunbird with a 4 banger had a rev limiter. Whats the deal with that? My car is a 95 and when it was stock it would hit the limiter on the 1-2 shift when it was auto. Now with the built motor and T56 sometimes its hard to stay off of it,especially when doing burnouts LOL

HAHA, but the stock PCM runs out at 7k though right? Why would you tune out the limiter though? Just curious

Haha, no. If you spin a stock LTx to 7k take a video camera with you. I want to see the carnage. I believe the stock limiter ranges from 5800-6300.

power shifting, speed shifting like we call it here, you have to be fast and coordinated, i can drive my car and all i do is speed shift when rowing through gears, i got to be so fast at it it sounded like i was in a auto, and never lifted my foot off the gas, Shane, i speed shifted the HELL out of that McLeod and it doesnt even look like it does it... that thing is a AWESOME clutch of you know how to drive :D... theres people that can drive a stick then theres people that can race a stick... not many people can race one but everyone thinks they can. but it is TERRIBLE on your drive line, the shock is 10x worse

Back in Feb of this year, some kid called me out. It was cold out (duh), I'm guessing about 40 degrees at best. I was on my street tires. He wanted to go from a low roll. A 1st gear roll. Verrry bad idea for me.

We hit it, I tried to roll into it so I wouldnt just blow the tires off but things dont always go as planned, do they?

I look down as the RPMs skyrocket and my tach had just come under 7k rpm, I almost shit myself.

But to this day, she runs like a champ. I'm glad to know she can handle some severe abuse lol.

I've done that before too, lol. winter = no traction. Ive also went from 4th-3rd when i wasnt paying attention, but only for a sec, as soon as i heard the rpms go higher i kicked the clutch back in. anyways i dont think my car was fully in 3rd, i think the wheels slipped and it didnt spin the motor as high (only to like 6700) as if it was under full downshift load... scary shit.

do you guys just practice like crazy to get ur shifts soo quick? Ive always had an auto in my car and im hoping to swap to a 6speed this upcoming yr since i decided im gonna keep my lt1 and fix it up. I would like to get pretty quick for the track without blowin my tranny or motor though. Is it best to just go out and practice and make urself faster on each shift??? sorry for the thread hijack and the dumb question but just really wanna know.

it takes practice and good parts. stock clutch and shifter will only cause you troubles.

This is true. A shifter might sound like a mod for a Honda owner, but it will keep your trans in one piece longer than the factory junk would.

Here's CALL911's thoughts on powershifting;

YES, it is harder on the clutch, but it is also harder on your tranny as well. I had a buddy who used to power shift all the time, and he only had 42,000 originaly miles on his Z28, and ended up having all kinds of tranny issues, and his car was moslty just bolt ons with some aftermarket rockers.

It CAN make you faster. I knew another guy who ran consistant 13.7's with his BONE stock down to the paper air filter and factory Goodyear GSC's on salad shooters with his M6 just by power shifting so well.

Here's my take on it though. You have to practice and make power shifting as quick and effective as when you were regularly shifting for it to make up the extra couple of tenths (at most).

I have done it in my car maybe 3 times ever. Personally I don't think I really gained much if anything, and don't make it a habit to keep trying to perfect it. For what little it would help you if you were a pro at it, it doesn't make up for the cost of the new clutch and tranny parts.

If you want to be faster, just spend some more $, and get something else to make up the difference like a good set of tires.

ok so ya'll are calling a power shift, when you engage cluch and shift then let off cluch all while having your right foot petal on the floor.

so what do you call a shift when all you do is never let off gas and never use cluch in your shift. you have to be trully intune with your car to do this, and alot of feel in the shifter to know when to slide into gear. does anyone else do this, and what is it called?
