I was disassembling the rod/pistons/rings from my old rotating assembly and this is what I found. I think my car got hungry?

Yeah, those hyperucraptic pistons don't last too long under boost. The ringlands just cant handle it.

The car had the blower on for maybe 3k miles at most. The engine had 30k miles... I can't believe I was driving around with the pistons in that condition.

Nice carnage!!!! I've got one that looks like that from a N/A lean detonation on the dyno.

Those look like perfectly good.............................................. .........

paper weights!!!

Sweet!....Make this a Sticky! So people getting ready to ask can look at this thread first....

I'm kidding about the sticky.....or am I????

Ill take one as a paper weight lol

I just linked this page to someone that was asking about FI on a stock motor!!! Im sure this will help make up his mind onthe right thing to do.

Interestingly enough, my car had been boosted at 8psi for just short of 50k miles before rebuild. It was very rarely opened up though, which seems like it would explain the longevity. lol

I had that happen at 5.5psi. That is the outcome of detonation or too much timing as stated above even in an NA application it will happen. If the tune was conservative I would be very surprised since a stock tune in a forced induction application is considered aggressive. Still a good battle wound.

cant blame the 8psi near as much as you can blame the tune or lack therof

It was dyno tuned by Bryan from PCMforless...

Gonna have to disagree with you there. Stock LT1 pistons suck, and don't like boost at all.

Yup, one little hiccup and they are toast!

ok good possibility but what type of fuel was in there when it was tuned vs what was in there when it was hurt. a bad batch of fuel can do this. a few variables can be the culprit.
there are quite a few running boost levels of that and are still running strong. not defending the stock hypers they do suck but they can handle some abuse. detonation does not care what type of piston you have!
sorry you have had this happen though, time for a more boost friendly set up and crank that boost up

looks like one of 2 problems.....ring gap(too small) the rings butted and snapped like rubber bands, and a lack of fuel.

I'm not sure what to blame it on, but the new engine's built and in the car. It was tuned for 93 and I ALWAYS ran 94 just to be safe. But the car did get it's workout. :D

I have now: 355 with forged rods/pistons, blower cam, and 12 psi pulley. I will probably do a meth setup over winter to stay safe unless I can find a used I/C setup for cheap.

are you saying you had no intercooler on the previous set up?
the fuel could have been bad eventhough it was from a high test pump at any rate you are back rollin now...:metal:

I totally agree that the tune makes a big difference. But what it comes down to is stock LT1's are not built to handle that kind of boost. I know a couple guys have run higher boost with success, but I've read and heard too many horror stories of guys running more boost than they should on a stock bottom end LT1, and end up doing exactly what the OP did.

:shiner:

Live and learn. The car should be done in the next week or so. I'm ready to tear up the streets! I've been missing my 6 speed for almost 3 months.

96lt1m6

that would explain a vast percentage of the problem
as stated live and learn:whistle:

some last and some dont, not all pistons are the same... i used 150 in nitrous on mine with NO problems for a year, and i have seen LT1s that spray and blow up the first time. i dont blame a tune, i blame the stock internals that WERE NOT MEANT for boost lol

Some of the damage could have been the tune. Just a thought
