View Full Version : Underdrive pulley install
First car Ive owned worthy of modding so this is my first time around with it.
Its a 94 LT...lah dee dah..
From what I gather I need to pull the balancer off, put the underdrive on, then stab the balancer on top of it? Will the factory bolts be long enough?
Any info would be grand.

should come with longer bolts and you will need a shorter belt. It is installed like you said.
I bought a set of headers/ORY from a guy and he threw the pulley and a 160 t-stat in with the deal.. along with 2 belts because he wasnt sure which one it was. So Ill have to get some longer bolts. I cant seem to get a puller on the balancer to get it off...
I just had it off doing the opti about 3k miles ago :(
Wish I had the pulley back then!

underdrive crank pulleys on our cars are pointless, I actually took mine off because of its idiocy. what sense does it make to shrink the diameter of the crank pulley when you're directly addicting mass to the rotating assembly. I had crappy charging with the crank pulley also.

I like the ASP 23% overdrive that replaces the stock balancer.
Specifically, I like it on a H/C car that runs a higher idle speed
(eliminates the charging issues Z28pr0jekt mentioned)
I had one on my old setup and I did notice that the motor revved up much quicker.
Keeping in mind that I also retained my PS and AC.
Cars without those accessories probably don't see as much of a gain.
I ran a slightly shorter belt, I have the PN around here somewhere.

Not worth it for a DD IMO, but since you got it as a package, why not install it.
I've heard of charging issues, but if you drive it daily I doubt you'll have a problem. Make sure the serpentine belt is the right size / tight.

I would have to agree, although the ASP 945103 has the integrated balancer at half the weight and the overdrive alt. pulley. Mine have been on for 5-6 years with no issues and I assure you you will notice a gain. Pulley only = problems. A bolt-on 3900# at 12.86 et.

yes a replacement pulley isn't bad. I was more directing towards the piggyback pulleys such as the one he got.. I have mine laying around here somewhere.. i found it more trouble than it was worth

i have an underdrive pulley and have no charging issues. mine charges around 12 only when i have my lights on and brake pedal pressed, otherwise it's around 13. i think mine is a march pulley w/ 25% or so U/D.

I have to disagree. A 25% loss in accessories for a aluminum pulley that weighs hardly anything. It is very light. I agree that you won't gain alot but heck every bit counts in my opinion.
