i'm getting a newer DD soon with a casette deck and i already have a 1gb mp3 player (might upgrade to a 4gb) and a casette radio adaptor. I have one issue with the mp3 player though. it sucks AAA batteries like there is no tomorrow. it takes one battery which only lasts a couple hours and if i forget to shit it off, its toast. anyway, i was looking at one of those cig lighter usb chargers and thought maybe i could hook the mp3 player up to it without a battery and just power it with the cig lighter. does anyone know if this is possible? i just had the player hooked to my PC via the usb for copying files without a battery in it to see if it would work that way and it did. so i know its powered by USB but do those charger deals only charge batteries or can they actively power a device thats turned on?
this is what i'm referring to.
i'm pretty sure with the player i have right now i could only have it plugged in unless i got a usb extension cable because it would block the other port but i may upgrade the mp3 player to a better one with more memory anyway.

I had contemplated getting a new car stereo but since this is just my winter car i don't know if i want to drop $100+ on a deck and all the wiring/facepate adaptor etc.

I'm almost certain that those USB devices will power your MP3.

Same opinion here with the charger...should work, but not positive.
Depending on the cassette player, that adapter may not work. I know my '01 blazer won't read the cassette emulators.

I think, but am not 100% sure that i've used it in that car before. it's my sisters old 99 malibu and a couple years ago i think we swapped cars for a day when she needed the wagon and i think i used the mp3 player and cassette adaptor in there then. I seem to remember it having trouble at first and wanting to flip the tape over and over but somehow i got it working.
IIRC the casette player looks like this one.

My blazer has a separate cassette player mounted in the center console wired to the CD player in the dash... that very well may have something to do with it. I just thought I'd mention it.
(That's the stock setup BTW)

my older sisters alero had that (her 99 at least, not sure on the 03 she has now) with the main deck being a CD player and the lower deck is a tape. thats how Ford used to do their cd players in the late 80s in the tbird SC's except that the main player was a tape deck and the cd player was below the AC controls.. I'm almost positive the day i borrowed the malibu i used my mp3 player/cassette adaptor in it but i could be wrong. i guess if it doesn't work i'll just get an fm modulator or something but i think they sound better using the cassette adaptor.

Just a tip...
Walmart sells 12VDC to 120VAC converters that also have USB power 5V power plug in on them. I think the brand is black&decker but not sure. Just saw them last week in the car section.
