alright you guys are going to hate me for this :) me and a buddy are workin on a 4.6l ford engine :) but... calm down its not a mustang.. crown vic :). its a 2000 with like 145xxx on it and the other day we where drivin it and all of a sudden it starts overheatin pretty bad.. so we look under the hood at this ford POS and it is sprayin coolant out the back of the intake? on the drivers side.. litterally shootin it out. so we replaced the gaskets and it still does it?? any suggestions??
oh and PS have you ever noticed 4.6s are really easy to work on?? must be a ford thing makin it easy for some of the mustang owners :) some of them are not the brightest :) JUST KIDDING.. we got the intake off in like 15 min tho.......

I've had this happen 4 times on the crown vic i use for work. The first 3 times it was the intake manifold and this last time it had something to do with a bad heater hose (not really sure and I didn't pay too much attention as it's not my car). Stupid Fords.

A girl i work with has a stang that had the same thing happen. She just bought a new intake and it fixed it.

It's a PI 4.6 so I'm guessing it has the aluminum crossover? If not, you can find an intake manifold for those cars with the aluminum crossover for ~$125.
And yes, the 4.6 is amazingly simple to work on. I helped my bro do a h/c/i swap on his 4.6 a couple years back. Took us a week or so, dawdling around a little at a time.

Ebay has some for the P71 for about $200 shipped. There's also this one.

So these engines spring leaks from their intakes and you have to buy the whole thing just to fix it? I replaced a rad on my sons 4.6 when he had a Tbird and it looked easy to work on. I told him that was the same engine the Stang has so he said "wanna race?". I just chuckled. He ended up not putting oil in the car and blew the engine. ha!

the intakes are plastic and are well known for cracking, especially around the thermostat housing.
I worked on one in a truck not too long ago (alum intake thankfully) and it was pretty easy. Where it gets tricky is setting the timing with multiple cams. If you're off by too far you'll be looking for new heads or dropping a load to get them fixed. Now that I've done it, it's pretty simple but it took me a while to understand it well enough to get the confidence that I was doing it correctly.
