View Full Version : Ahhh - What did I do wrong? Clutch Swap Problems

I just finished installing a new Ram Powergrip. After bleeding the system I got in the car and tried pressing on the clutch pedal. At first there was ALOT of resistance, it almost felt stuck, so I gave it a little muscle and it made a slight popping noise and I was able to press the pedal in.

The problem is it feels like there is nothing there now. There is little to no resistance pressing it down, and very little pressure pushing it back up. I'm going to take the slave down to see if I can see anything.

But, any ideas what to look for? This is my first clutch change.

that sounds like what happened to me when the clutch fork ripped my throw out bearing in two.. but this was after a year or so of using it
might as well just start taking it back apart..

I agree. You're probably going to need to pull it apart for a look.

Clutch fork may just not be completely on the throwout bearing..

Had that happen when I did my first spec because spec came with a hexagonal throwout bearing rather than the stock round one, so it took more "umph" to pop the fork all the way on the throwout bearing

Sounds like the fork not on all the way and you shot the piston out of the slave.

Exactly what happened.

So how do I tell if the clutch fork is engaged to the throwout bearing? It seems to have alot of play but I can't tell if it's on the throwout bearing. I try to push it up but it just slides up and doesn't seem to catch the throwout bearing (if it's not already on it).

Anyone?

make sure the fork is on the right side of the throw out berring mine wasnt somehow, but i just poped mine in place by pushing up on the fork with a flat head screw driver and u feel it pop into place.

How much muscle should it take? I felt like I'd break the screwdriver if I went to much harder.

then u might have to wiggle it a little bit an try to get the berring to turn, what i ended up really having to do is loosen up all the bolts that bolt the trans to the bell housing loosen them just enough to slide the tranny back far enough to look inside an get a screwdriver in there and rotate the berring. but i had a few more reasons to get inside there, my fork ended up on the back side of the throw out berring. i ended up doing this process a few times i was learning lol

Okay, so when I pull it down, it goes to about here:

I can push it up, using just my fingers, to this position:

Is that engaged? It seems like it kind of "pops" onto something. I tried using a screwdriver to get it higher, but it doesn't seem like it's going to happen.

Thats it. You should feel slight resistance and then a slight pop. Feel if it is in by slight wiggle and you should hear it clank a bit.

now you should be able to use something to push on it just as a slave would to see if its working correct. thats how i found my fork was on the back side of the throw

It should just pivot back and forth right?

yeah i used a jack handle and pushed on the circle area just to make sure it worked.

u dont have to do it was just something i used to save my slave cyl in case there was an issue like u had.

It seems to be working good.

Now I just need to find a rebuild kit for the slave and I'll see if that was the problem.

I will post with an update once I find a kit.
