This is prolly longer than it needs to be.. I just want to get all the details in there.. :)

I took my car to an auto body shop to see if I could get the hood and roof repainted. The roof was all splotchy and sunburned, and the hood's clear coat has come off completely and is peeling.

Okay, so the paint guy said he wouldn't be able to match it, so he'd do the whole car for $2,000. The whole car doesn't need repainted. He did say he could do the hood for $700 with no-match guarantees. Wtf. I don't think so.

So my dad and I decided we could do it ourselves. I took my car to his auto repair shop and spent a few hours sanding the roof down. Sanded down to the color (only taking the clear coat off), but some of the grey primer showed through.

We had taken the car to O'Reillys to get the color scanned and they mixed up some Quasar blue acyrilic enamel. I wanted to re-primer the roof, but my dad thought we could get away with just putting the new color over it. So we did.

It went on great and it looks great only it turned out to have a purple hue. Now, I think I could live with it being a shade darker or a shade lighter.. but this is a shade purple! It looks okay from the side, but when you get up on it, it's obviously different. And I certainly can't put that color on the hood.

My dad thinks maybe if we'd put primer down, it would have lightened it up and taken the purpleness out. We should have primered it anyways because the original primer that showed through left some subtle lighter/darker areas.

Dad doesn't seem to want to fix it. I don't mind resanding it and primering it... but if I put that same paint on and it's still purple, then what??

So.. I don't know what to do. Do I need to go back and have them scan the new color/old color again and give me a remix that's more blue?? Do you think just primering it could work?

I'd take it to O'Rielys and show them that there is a difference and see what they tell you.

IMO sounds like they mixed it wrong, its a possibility that you have a different variant of that color and they either gave you the prime color or the wrong variant.

If you respray it id hit it with a coat of sealer first.

Also, it sounds like the guy at the body shop was just trying to be lazy, because the job would require some blend work but can be done.

When does the sealer go on... after primer? what does it do..

in this case the sealer would go over the old base/primer provided you dont sand down to the metal anywhere.

It basically provides a consistent and all one color substrate for the new paint. In the PPG lines you can use their epoxy primers and mix it 4:1:1 primer, catalyst, and reducer to use as a sealer. You could also get it tinted to either help the paint cover faster (blue base over blue sealer) or even change the color up a bit if the basecoat is somewhat of a transparent color.

always use a sealer if you didnt primer it. If you dont you will have light and dark spots all over the car. Using a sealer will give you an even base coat of color.

Turns out they gave me BMW paint by mistake! How does that happen? Anyways, we got some GM paint ordered and hopefully it will match a lot better. Gonna sand down the roof again and re-do it. I'll post pics when she's done :D

Thanks guys!
