So I was driving my car home from work and when I went to turn the car off, the key wouldn't turn. So after a lot of force, I got the key to turn back and get my key out. But now I can't turn the car on, the key can't turn. So my questions are is what could have suddenly caused this? And how much can I expect for parts and labor at a repair shop?

Shoot some lubricant in there if you can and see if you can't free it up. If that doesn't work, probably a new lock cylinder and key....but then you're faced with the issue of having mis-matched door and ignition keys.

I don't think it needs lub, it wasn't showing any sign of resistance and then suddenly is stuck and impossible to turn.

mine is fucked up also... but it only won't go in lock and you have to wiggle it a little to get the key out. went to the dealer and it's expensive as shit! someone told me $40... i think it was like $75 bucks for it... goddamnit

I'm talking about the ignition cylinder, the door locks are okay.
My key got stuck in the ignition once in the trans am and I couldn't start the car. I had to get it towed home with the key stuck in the ignition. I ended up replacing the entire steering column.

I have two f-bodies right now and BOTH of them have given me trouble when trying to turn the car off and get the key out of the ignition. One time was when I had just did the cam swap and some wiring was melting on my header, i couldnt get the car to shut off.

lol that isnt even the issue close to what he is talking about..

My car came with a door key and an ignition key :D
Just like every other camEro in the world.
Unless you're just referring to the new key being in better shape than the door key...

Yea, I took it to a shop, he's going to start work tomorrow. Time to see what the culprit was.

Did you make sure the car was all the way in park or jiggle the steering wheel?? If the car is not ALL the way in park that will happen. You may have f-d it up forcing it out.??? They do wear out over time but most the time its something stupid.

LOL i had to think about that for a second... i think the only company who's ignition keys are keyed with the door locks (but not the truck as in a single key for the car like japan) is Ford.
who cares if your ignition gets replaced, its not gonna effect your door lock key, lol
