I assume were talking long tubes?
It's not really bad on the engine. My main concern would be not enough back pressure and having such a hot exhaust dumping right below the car.

No, backpressure is a myth. What you'll do though is run rich. Very rich. The O2s will see more air, so the PCM will dump in more fuel. You'll lose some bottom end from that. Not to mention it will be loud as hell. But damage? No. I drove for a week on open headers.

But from what I've seen (which I'll admit is not much), most cars have picked up horsepower from having added backpressure, even if it is just a Y-Pipe.

Backpressure isn't a myth, it does exist. BUT, the majority of the people you'll come across have it confused with air velocity in an exhaust system. The "backpressure" that you want is a properly sized exhaust system, with tubing that will flow enough air up top, but is small enough to cause air to flow quickly down low. (This increases the scavenging effect of the exhaust, which is also one of the major selling points of longtubes. ;) )
Running open headers will shift your torque curve into the higher rpms, giving you a semi-noticable bump in horsepower, but the loss in low end torque usually isn't worth it for most street cars.
You could run no manifolds/headers and probably be okay, though I wouldn't suggest it for obvious reasons. ;)
