Ok I know a lot about ford 8.8 rear ends but do not know much on chevy yet. What is the stock gear ratio? What gears would be appropriate to run in an automatic 96 corvette? I do have to do some freeway driving and may have to do more because of school. Does the speedo just need recalibrated? Thanks for the help. I am honeslty doing some research but it seems more difficult to find the info...

Assuming you're an automatic because that's what you requested, the possibilities are: 2.59 RPO GM1, 3.07 RPO G44, 3.45 RPO GM3.

Depending on which one you have, I'd either suggest some 3.73s, or 3.90s. Given you've got an auto, your first gear ratio is 3.06. You don't want to go too high on the gearing, or you'll NEED some sticky tires just to drive around on the street. And you'll definitely have some fun in the rain.

I'd say the best all around performer for an auto LT1 car is a set of 3.73s.

Cool. It seems like 3.73s seem to be the popular choice for domestic cars in general.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but I am aiming to get the gears and install them next month. I was reading around that if you have the factory 2.59 gears that when you get the aftermarket ring and pinion they have to be thick. I have RPO G44 which is the 3.04 gears. Would I need a thick set of aftermarket gears like the 2.59? Also I am all ears for brand prefrences. Anybody have good luck or bad luck with any particular brand?

I havent really seen motive gears for my car. Ive seen richmond, strange, precision etc... They all cost around 330-400 bucks! Any input on whether they have to be thick or normal?
