View Full Version : A/C Compressor will not turn on unless jumped at the Relay

Ok so I thought maybe my compressor was dead or something else and paid to have a local tech take a look at it. (I have a spare thankfully)
He said it was low on 134a so I bought some we put it in and it def got cold. (Obviously we looked at all the fuses, did some relay swapping and forced the compressor on at the relay to show it worked still)
Now I just found a local small guy through craigs list as I really don't like bigger shops who then love to try and BS you... You also tend to meet nice guys from time to time..... This time is turning out to not be one of them. (I also like that you can partake in whats going on not just live on the "Hope" they actually did things correctly in most cases).
So the AC blows cold the whole way home, all is right with the world good to go.
Then I go to take it out tonight and its nice out so I leave the AC off.... or so I thought. The controls say off but my feet are cold.... I pop the hood and check the relay. Sure enough he jerry rigged the relay by putting a wire between the two contact points to bypass and force the compressor on....
So now I am confused, I took it off obviously but why is it having this issue?
I am assuming since everything works outside the cabin that the switch itself could be the issue and I will pull it off tomorrow to check, but maybe someone else here has seen this before and can shed some light on the issue.
Thanks so much!

If you were low on 134 it's possible enough leaked out since you recharged it to not allow the compressor to come on. Check your pressure again and if it's low add more with dye, then you'll be able to find out where your leak is. You said the tech jumped relays to force the compressor on is it possibole the jumper was accidentially left in?

No because he used a set of all metal plyers.
I checked the codes and old codes read low 134 but not currently. Right nwo I am tracing down a fuel and spark issue.

did you ever figure out the problem?
im having the same issue except i just put my motor back in and hooked my a/c back up (the ac was working last november before it had a cracked condensor line) i bought a new reciver dryer a few cans of 134a and some oil evacuated it and charged it. now the compressor wont turn on unless i push on the brass part of the relay or wrap a zip tie around the relay, i replaced the relay but had to open it and zip tie it so it turns the compressor on. it sucks cuz i just spent almost 200 bucks to get the ac working again, and now it only works when i jump it. im not good with a/c's and dont have the money to take it to a shop so they can find everything in the book wrong with it. lol.

No my Opti died again on the way to paint. I am supposed to get it back today but I have heard nothing.
After that I will be fixing the AC problem but I too have no idea why its doing this.

Do you have a set of A/C gauges? I may be able to help you out with this.

my buddy used his gauges and evac. to charge it all up not sure if he knew what he was doing ether, but i know nothing about ac stuff so idk. if you could take a look at it an give me ur imput that would be awesome, the guy that charged it is saying theres no low pressure switch and it must be an electrical problem and that i should just put a flip switch on it but yea i dont think i could come to doing something like that.

Ill give you guys a little heads up from experience. If you have had the motor out of the car and have disconnected the main engine harness from the inside, that is most likely where your problem lies. On the passenger side behind the kick panel. There is 3 wiring harnesses that you disconnect to pull the motor out with harness and all. the little 2 wire connector back there is the AC switch. I was having to jump the relay until i discovered that it was not plugged back in. AC works like a champ now.

Mine was different, after the car threw the code for the AC being low even now recharged it would not let it turn back on. After clearing it everything works great.

BTW, it was the temp sensor that is in the evep box. It senses if the evap is freezing over and will turn off the compressor ontil the temp reaches a certain point. With it disconected, the compressore wont kick on.
